2007 TDV8 RRS Turbo/actuator problems

Hi All,

New to RRS's and to this forum so please be gentle.
Hoping you guys can help me out a bit.
Bought my first ever RRS about 2 months ago, all was good running sweet etc, then started to get EML on, looked up codes and got P140A, something EGR related I believe. It was at this point i was going to blank them off and have a remap, but, then i started to get what can only be described as a budgie under the bonnet at low revs, ( 900 - 1400 ) annoyingly running around town type of revs. high revs and it goes away. Big Cry
After a bit of digging I think that the N/S side (lh) turbo actuator is failing. I made a hook type tool and operated it manually from underneath and can replicate the noise.
My question is..... can the turbo / actuator be changed without taking the body off? I'm quite handy with a spanner but don't fancy the body off.
Any help or advice would be greatly received.
Also any good indy's in the East Midlands? Ashby De La Zouch Area

England 2005 Range Rover Sport TDV6 HSE Rimini Red

The actuator is probably ok
The inside of the turbo maybe sooted up.
Worth trying a bottle if Wynn’s vvt cleaner.

Yes people change the turbo body on.
Not nice but possible

Poco my turbo is being replaced in Oldbury by a company who do it without removing the body. Best Turbos is the name. Can't vouch for them as I'm in Manchester and it's a warranty job.

Hi Andy k,
Thanks for your info, tried vvt cleaner, just in case but 99% sure it’s the actuator, both turbos running/spooling up ok, but the lh actuator is very lazy to respond, getting electrical signals ok but not moving very much. The link rod has free movement.

Yes seen their advert and contacted them.
Quoted £2000+vat to do both without removing the body.
If all else fails !!!

Most jobs on v8 are body off sadly.
Inc turbo changing.

That’s what I was afraid of.
My fear is, that if the body comes off that when it goes back I’ll end up with squeaks, rattles and electrical problems.
I’ll do a bit of research and probably attempt a turbo replacement myself, body on.

It's designed to be removed and there is just a process to follow removing and replacing it. It's not the big issue that some seem to think it is. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

I thought as much, may be a little awkward but I’m prepared for that.
Reading the forums makes it sound very daunting, far more than it probably is.
Think I’ll try to research how to access the turbos a little easier and give it a go.

possible electrical problems (but you know to look at which connectors you touched)

no squeaks

Got it booked into a local indy next Friday for a firm diagnosis.
They seem to agree with me over the phone but would like a look to be able to confirm.
Got to be worth an hours labour.

Hi Guys, had it into a local Indy, first for a diagnosis then a week later to fit a leaking turbo hose.
However my problem is still there, squeaking / chirping sound at low revs 1200 - 2000 now.
Indy says would need another couple of hours for diagnosis, (thought I’d already done that) they’re saying possible turbo and quoting mega money (£1800 + parts + vat).
It’s seams to me that it’s left (ns) turbo actuator fault, as when I move the link rod manually, it makes the same noise.
Is the actuator lazy or is it the ring in the turbo?
Both turbos spool up ok, car great to drive, have p140a code for egr on same side, could this be my problem?
I’m reluctant to think so because I can make the car make the noise by moving the actuator arm manually!
Thinking of doing turbos myself with body on
Any thoughts / advice gratefully received.

Did the TDV8 not have a issue with warping the exhaust manifold and snapping some studs that caused something like that. Just have a vague re-collection of reading something to that effect.

I think so, but it doesn’t have that type of exhaust blow by type of sound, can’t see any tell tail signs of smoke around the manifold but must admit it’s a bit hard to see.
All my thinking is towards the turbo / actuator because I can make it make the noise on tickover with a little push on the push rod.
Starting to p!ss me off a bit now

 61 AB 5.0 supercharged rocket
07 HSE TDV8 with lots of toys EGR removed BAS remap
56 HSE WAS FULL OF PROBLEMS
