Jacks and things

Hi all,
I'm new here and new to RRS so please go gentle Very Happy

I need to deal with a sticking rear caliper on my 2008 2.7. I have a 2 tonne jack and 2 tonne axle stands but concerned they're not going to be "man enough" even though I'm just dealing with 1 corner.

So... trolly jack or bottle jack and what height do I need it to extend to in order to get the thing off the ground? I'm also going to have to deal with a dodgy front wheel bearing the near future so will need to to cater for that too.

Any help appreciated.

Cheers.

the weight of the vehicle is 2.8t from memory and this is split evenly over the two axles, so technically your existing jack and axel stands would be ok to lift one corner.

However I would recommend purchasing a decent jack & 3t axel stands if you intend to do more work.

keep it in standard height mode for jacking purposes.

Apart from anything else, 3T jacks tend to have a higher lift than a 2T jack - and the car isn't exactly low to the ground Smile 2014 BMW 530d Touring, 2006 BMW 650i, 2018 Mini Cooper S

You can use 2 axel stands per corner on the drivers side if required.

The 2nd tends to take a fraction of the load, but useful none the less.

A discovery 2 red bottle jack is a very useful thing to have for maintenance and for emergency roadside use

Another one for SGS, I have the 3t 465mm lift. It's very heavy so not really suitable for keeping in the car but I have the utmost confidence in it (still use stands as well). I think they have a sale from time to time.

A pad with a pin to engage in the chassis jacking-points would be good - and re-assuring if that is where you are lifting it. Don't forget the chocks under the floor of the boot. Wink

Quite a few on the Disco3 forum have trolley jack adaptors and they occasionally come up for sale.
When you decide on your jack, try googling or an ebay search for one.

Hi and welcome Thumbs Up

a lot depends what "You" are confident doing and trust you have good equipment

Think my trolley jack is 2 or 2.5T and use homemade stands Shocked (read line above Whistle )
can not remember ever jacking up via the chassis but would have it in offroad first if I did (its got to go up there anyway)
I jack up under the suspension arms with a wood packer to spread the load, the car nearly always wants to "adjust" it's self during jacking, no matter what combination of doors,boot/open/shut/hazards is suggested
Only time ours was jacked up was to change wheels/tyres

Remember having some work done on the front of our D3 at home (by a very well respected mobile) and he used a trolley jack under the front of the D3 and jacked up front end to work on both sides together (rack arms from memory)

Whats the worst that can happen Laughing

I always remove the two air suspension fuses in the engine bay fusebox before jacking.

My jack is an Omega Magic Lift. It's a bit of a beast for DIY use and weighs a tonne (well, 30 odd kg), but it does the job of lifting the RRS no problem. It's similar to this: https://ebay.us/aLVnP5

I use 6 tonne stands on each corner which I have much more confidence in than 3 tonne ones I use for other vehicles. They only need extending a little bit and have a nice large footprint for stability. Kev
