Front wheel bearing - DIY?

As per my jacking thread, I'm new to RRS so learning every day. I have a 2008 2.7 which is new to me.

Is replacing the front wheel bearing a DIY job? I can get access to an air impact wrench and long breaker bar to crack the tough nuts, but do i need more than that? Any gotchas I need to be aware of? And who supplies the best (non-LR priced!) replacements?

Same as the RRS.
Timken are the OE supplier and the general consensus of opinion is don't buy cheap ones.

Thanks Oldandconfused. That's the perfect information I needed. Looks very doable.

1. Don't buy cheap bearings.

2. Watch the stake nut torque. There is a new lower figure as noted in the thread referenced above. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

So steer clear of the Britpart and Bearmach bearings?

You "may" need a 3-leg puller to get the hub off the axle, in lieu of the LR Special Service Tool, and then draw the axle back in with the hub nut - again, in lieu of the SST.

I was all set to buy two of these - https://www.jgs4x4.co.uk/range-rover-sport...ly-timken/ - as that's the cheapest I could find a Timken bearing, but with Christmas fast approaching, the wheel bearings starting to sound like a pair of angry bears, and no time to do it.. I had my local indy do both fronts with Timken bearings for <£500, which I didn't think was too bad for a job I didn't want to do on the drive, in the rain, between now and Saturday Laughing 2014 BMW 530d Touring, 2006 BMW 650i, 2018 Mini Cooper S

Thanks, Aaron. I have a puller so should be sorted there. Looks like Timken is the way to go. Mine is making no noise at all, just noticable play when the wheel is off the ground so whilst it needs sorting, I don't think it's imminently going to disintegrate.

Hopefully it will be a fun job and not a PITA!

My off-side was noted as having play at the MOT, but I'm pretty sure it was the near-side making all the groaning noises (because the noise went away when turning left, taking the stress off the near-side).. made a nice Christmas bill to go with the one from HMRC, anyway Laughing 2014 BMW 530d Touring, 2006 BMW 650i, 2018 Mini Cooper S

A handy tip is using a SDS hammer drill and a blunt chisel bit, set the drill to hammer action only and use that to force off the hub once the shaft has been removed.

if like me you didn't read that post, I ended up using a sledge hammer and the look on my neighbours face when they were watching me swing at it full whack was priceless.... Shocked

It's no fun job to get the old bearing out, unless you got the OEM JLR tools. Can be a pain in the neck. Be prepared! RRS 3.0 SDV6 HSE Lux
