Hello to everyone, I have just ordered a new RRS SDV6 HSE. I will be looking to take it off road so thought selecting 19" wheels would be a good idea. Given that smaller wheels with higher profile tyres are better for offroad. However it would appear that there are no AT 235/65 r19 tyres available. There are 255/55 r19 AT tyres but this is not a size in the handbook and based on wheel size calculator reduces the ground clearance. Not ideal in that it could cause warranty or insurance issues.

I could still change my spec to the 20" wheels as there are some AT tyres in the approved size of 255/55 r20 such as General Grabber AT3's. But being 20" have lower profile tyres.

So I think I have three options.

1/ Stick with 19" OEM supplied tyres
2/ buy 255/55/r19 AT tyres - Quite a few to choose from but non standard.
3/ Change order to 20" wheel and fit GG AT3's

Very interested in peoples experience and peoples opinion on how best to proceed.

You'll be fine with the 255/55R19 - that was the standard zise on the D4.

You get the Goodyear Wranger Duratrac in 19" - it's a great off-road tyre, plenty of D4 owners in ZA use it

Alternatively, get the 20" rims and fit 275/55R20 AT tyres - BFGs, or Pirelli ATR, General Grabber, plenty to choose in that size. --

did not know 235.65.19 was a standard size for the RRS, never seen one sat on that size

as said ^ I would go for 255.55.19 if going for 19" as standard size on a number of L/R's
Although my choice would be the 255.55.20.
our L494 sits on 275.45.21 as standard so the 235.65.19 is
40mm less width, 28mm more sidewall with 25mm more wheel radius so circumference is not much different

I'd go with the 20s and fit 255/55 AT3. It's the same sidewall as the 255/55/19 anyway and the larger diameter overall gives slightly better ground clearance.

Unless you're planning to off road in muddy conditions, the AT3 is very good off road.

One thing: you mention you're getting a SDV6 HSE. If you want to go off road, don't forget to get the off road pack fitted or you won't have low range. Low range is more important off road than tyre size. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

The Dynamic or the on road / off road pack does add the benefit of the active rear diff. Makes it even better off road. Does add the £s though!  2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Goodyear wrangler AT Adventure do a 255/65 R19. but it is a summer tyre. this will give diameter 32". In this part of the world 32" have been shown to fit ok including in the spare hole. This will give 6.5" sidewall. Given that my L494 speedo reads about 3 or 4% high on 31" tyres (so big assumption that it is the same for others) then fitting the 32" tyre will improve speedo accuracy to almost dead on. Not sure on your regulations over there, but over here we can legally go to 7% larger overall diameter. My speculation is that the car was originally designed for 32" diameter, but then no tyres were readily available when it was launched, so they squibbed out and went to 31". I will likely go to 32" diameter on my 20" wheels once my current tyres run out, looking at Pirelli AT Plus in 275/55/R20. MY15.5 SDV6 HSE Dynamic without the H . Yulong White

I have 20" wheels with Grabber AT3s and they have got me out of a few slippery situations already this Autumn!

I bought wheels and tyres, but I recall someone on here was selling a set at a very good price recently. Might be worth ordering your car with 21" wheels and slapping a set of off road tyres on during the grubby part of the year. Although, road noise in the AT3s is surprisingly quiet.

the trye, wheel size, numbering, diameter and speedo accuracy etc is all greek to me but I am interested in some better tyres for the winter

the current tyres are 275/45/21 as I have a Dynamic S with the Brembo callipers on the front. I though about 20 wheels as there is more choice tyre wise but dont know if they will go over the callipers

Is therer an idiots guide to tyre and wheel sizes ?

All the brake calipers are Brembo, when you spec red you pay for the paint! Should fit, here's a pic of mine (2016 HSE Dynamic). Just back from the car wash....you can see why I need decent tyres for the winter!

just to confirm the OP is asking about "off road" tyres not "winter" tyres

Depending on use depends how much of a compromise you make,
full on Mud terrain or All terrain
All season tyre or full Winter tyre

The AT3 does seem to give a good balance as AT and Snow flake winter rated

You really need (want) multiple sets of wheels and tyres but sure no one on here has that
