Ah, further proof that insurance companies (underwriters, at least) are slimy, snivelling little <word> who will do anything to get out of paying out..

I mean:

In other words, probably 90% of all second hand vehicles are effectively uninsured, if that's the standard they are setting - because once a car is more than about 5 years old, who is going to know what was an optional extra and what was standard fit? Very interesting. I think there needs to be some give and take here and perhaps it should be incumbent on the insurer to justify any increase in premium based upon proven history of increased risk resulting from the modification - and not just an excuse to squeeze more premium out of the policy holder.

I had to tell my insurer (Aviva) that I had added side steps as they classified that as a mod. But there was no extra premium involved. The question is do I need to tell them about my National Trust sticker (which I need to display in order to park in their car parks), and the RNLI badge?? And what if I have a council parking permit or such like?? Robin

Looks like you have to tell them everything going by that. Non OEM tyres, brake pads, exhaust, wipers. Its getting ridiculous if they are getting to the stage of stickers Don't leave a bus ticket lying on the dash

The reply "to the best of my knowledge, it's exactly as it left the factory and I have not modified it in any way" should, in any reasonable world put the ball firmly back in their court. It smacks of double standards if they want to charge extra on the premium for items properly (and legal and safely) installed by the manufacturer, and yet in the event of a claim they will say "ah yes, but that doesn't increase the value of the car".
They can't have it both ways. Did I really just say that about insurance companies?
Is the insurance ombudsman a toothless tiger, or will they do something about this?

you can of course take it the other way - I have with my disco. List out every modification in great detail and then pass it on to the underwriter via the broker. It ran to 4 pages of A4 and I think they just gave up reading and said yes after line 6

My ex-Police XC70 is a nightmare to insure. My current insurers charged me an extra £26 to when I disclosed the differences over a standard XC70 D5 SE but then whacked £100 on the renewal. Ringing around, as soon as I started talking modifications, I was either refused a quote or they went silly money. Did eventually get it matched by a specialist who had previously quoted double after I spoke on a forum to their rep. I even went to performance car specialists who didn't want to know or cheaply enough.

My point was that it is a factory supplied car to the police, so was safely modified. All the parts are standard Volvo parts, so not expensive to replace. All the modifications compliment each other. I even sent a build list from Volvo to some.

Anyway, end result is 3x what online marketplaces offer

having a big football club sticker in your back window is asking for trouble if you visit a rival town

having a i love Greta Thumburger sticker is also not the same but could cause issues, likewise if you was pro Boris or Corbin

You would think that, in this day and age, we could have stickers that changed allegiance depending upon location.
