Need some advice.getting water in fuel warning whats the best way to deal with this Thanks in advance

under the car.

approx. in the area under the drivers seat is the fuel filter.

You need to loosen the wheel on the bottom a couple of turns and let the water out. Once the water has come out, fuel will start coming out, so turn it off then.

I guess if you drain it into a bowl it should be obvious when fuel starts coming out as it will look oily

New filter housing required

Filter housing or sensor?

As DM says filter housing,,ive just had a 2012 sdv6 in with same message & I changed filter & it was still same,,i message DM & he told me to change filter housing which I did & it solved the problem. Andy.

So what is the logic - the sensor screws into the actual filter so is remote from the filter housing - so how does needing a new filter housing set the sensor off? 07MY RRS TDV6

No idea Garry,,but when I changed the filter housing it got rid of the message.I was just going on what DM told me,,he has worked on enough of these,if he says its filter housing then its filter housing.Even when I drained the filter no water came out just fuel but I changed the filter anyway. Andy.

Andy - not disputing the result just trying to understand why - the only thing that I can think of is that the filter not sealing on the housing can let water in which sets off the water alarm but then fuel would also be squirting out. 07MY RRS TDV6

Nothing to do with water being in the fuel

Faulty housing giving a false alarm. Never seen actual water in fuel on a 2.7/3.0 yet

Sorry Disco Mikey your comments are confusing.

The filter housing is what is bolted to the chassis and has the inlet and outlet fuel pipes and the filter twists into it.

At the bottom of the filter you have the sensor that screws onto the filter, if screwed in too tight the sensor housing can crack causing leaks and false indications.

So are you talking about the fuel filter housing that bolts to the chassis or the sensor housing that bolts up to the bottom fuel filter.

Oh - I dont know about the UK, but here it is cheaper to buy the complete fuel filter kit that comes with fuel filter housing, fuel filter and sensor than just the sensor by itself.

The fuel filter housing has a sensor wire integrated into the plastic, which makes contact with the top of the filter, and is bolted to the chassis

The sensor and drain that screw into the bottom of the filter are exactly that, a sensor and drain...

If it displays a "Water in Fuel" warning, and the fuel is clear of water it needs a new fuel filter housing

So, it needs a fuel filter housing to clear the warning

Ok follow you now - the sensor completes its circuit through the filter housing when water is present - but if there is a fault in the housing side it may give the "water in fuel" indication.

Not trying to be difficult but trying to understand the system a bit better.

I had this problem on mine. As Mikey says, it is related to fuel filter housing. I replaced mine and it solved the problem.

It's a bit of a pig of a job if you have fat fingers but doable without dropping the subframe. Kev
