Service (Additional Oil)

Every time my Range Rover Sport comes back from a service (5 year service plan) they leave a 0ne litre bottle of Mobil 1 in the footwell for top up. My car luckily does not use any oil between services. My F type Jaguar however does not get a (free?) bottle

Looks like it, as I now have 3 bottles Whistle Or when the service plan ends I can say to them I shall supply my own oil. Rolling with laughter

Ford do this too (or certainly did)

It's a good hit to modern drivers that you are actually meant to check the level between services!
and you will always have oil to hand of the same spec to use if topup required

You haven’t filled in your car details in your profile so we don’t know what RRS model you are driving.

BUT, if you are driving a 3.0 diesel with DPF the oil must meet this spec.

5W 30 Fully Synthetic C1 WWS M2C934 -B

If that is not on your free bottle it ain’t the right oil.

Hope it is.

I can’t find a 5W 30 C1 , they do C2 but that is the wrong oil

My profile wont allow me to put in anything newer than year 2013 I have a 2015 Range rover sport HSE diesel & although the main dealers get a bad rep, I imagine they know what grade of oil to put in.

I admire your confidence and I hope it is not misplaced. My experience was taking my Freelander 2 in of its first service and when I was presented with the invoice it said they had put in an A5 oil. I queried this and they said it was just a computer mistake printing the invoice. At that time Freelander2s were having regular DPF problems some of which were attributed to using the wrong oil. I insisted they drain my car and put in the correct grade as speced. They were not happy but did it.

Andy K - C3 can be used if C1 is not available but must be changed more frequently. I have never heard of C2 being used.

With the crank issues this engine has I would want proof the right oil is in it.

C2 is for DPF cars allowed if C1 difficult to find. See the LR owners manual.
The difference between C1 and C2 oils is the ash content. C1 max 0.5, C2 max 0.8 (see ACEA )

I studied the different oil technical specs in dept and came to the conclusion that 5W30 Mobil 1 ESP , a C2/C3 qualification, is probably the best oil for the 3.0 TDV6 DPF. Why?

Because the ash content is not more than 0.6, so almost a C1, but it also meets C3, which means a stronger oil film than C1. This is preferable with an eye to the crankshaft failures. Mobil also has in comparison a very high boiling point (240), wich says someting about the synthetic quality of this oil (ester content) and a relative strongTBN (7.0) which means that it provides high cleaning capabilities.

IMO Mobil 1 ESP out performes Castrol Edge and most other C1 oils. And, no, I have no connections to Mobil. RRS 3.0 SDV6 HSE Lux
RRS 3.0 TDV6 gone
LR 3 HSE V8 gone

Andy, is your Evoque a 2.2 SD4 or a 2.0 Ingenium motor - the Ford based 2.2 doesn’t seem to suffer the oil dilution issue to the same extent as either the SDv6 or the Ingenium engines. Over on BabyRR.com we have had next to no reports of early services being required due to oil dilution on either the Ford or the Ingenium engines 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it
