The basic engine design is a Ford/PSA design BUT LR modified the lubrication and breathing to suit the offroad use of the vehicle so it could still operate at >45degrees cross slope and going up/down hills hence Ford have not much to do with it is what I have been told. All this doesn’t bode very well for the Ingenium Engines designed totally in house by JLR - those engines are smaller capacity but with far higher outputs so are stressed engines anyway. Soon won’t be a problem for me as I am leaving the marque purely because of this lack of honesty/ openness by LR after >20 years of buying only LR Products. To me it doesn’t matter if there 10 or 10,000 SDv6 engine failures, LR’s lack of openness on the matter has shattered confidence in their customer services and corporate honesty - what else are they hiding their head in the sand about? The fact that also they chose to deal with it on a case by case basis stinks too, especially as the issue is not something of the owner’s making but the company’s poor engine design. I am amazed that nobody here with the issue has taken it up with What Car? Magazine. Also the same with the problems some people have with recurring failures of DPF on some cars where as other don’t have the problem in similar conditions. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

You can't beat a good old Td5 discovery 2. I Still have one in my garage as my baby can't sell her. We'll as long as the oil pump drive bolt is tight ! He, he. Then there pretty solid.

This is scary though with all the new landrover products!!

Plus the tech inside is really bad too behaving good and bad especially the 2017 sports !!!

Landrover really need to get their act together as I'm loosing my confidence in them too !!!!

Such a shame though as the L494 sport is a gorgeous motor.

I read in this months Land Rover Monthly that the TD5 was probably their best engine....

We do have a lack of hard information here.

We don't really know how many engines are failing, nor under what circumstances, nor do we really have hard facts about the modes of failure. Which is quite frustrating, but nevertheless true.

ALL manufactures have mechanical failures, and few of them are open about them - no-one recall Porches' slipped liner issues a few years back? They never opened up about what was happening, although from the experience of a friend, they simply quietly replaced the engines.

However - I admit that I don't want to ever own a high end RR product outside of OE warranty. Nor would I ever take on JLRs aftermarket /extended warranty. MY2016 HSE D SDV6 - gone due to fuel dilution problems.

Well given this situation and the fact that I am due to renew mine it’s either get the v8 diesel next or move brand but there is nothing out there anywhere near the same ................ is there ?

Apparently in south Africa its about 1.3% of sales i just read which does not sound a lot but it still sounds like an awful lot of money and i agree land rover should stump up a better than 20% contribution if its all been serviced and the recommended oils used

that's LR's official PR horse manure - the figure is much, much higher than this.

Oz also has a fairly significant failure rate.

An informal survey on a local forum guesstimates the rate to be closer to between 10-15%  --
