The battery on our 4.2 rrs keeps going flat when the car has been left for more than a day . It had a new battery in November and I have also just replaced the bonnet catch as the alarm kept going off . It had a 100 mile drive on Saturday was then not used Sunday or Monday and was flat this morning Tuesday. Has anyone any ideas what might be causing this . Thanks

What sort of use does your car get in terms of daily use? Is it mostly short runs?

If yes to above then try giving the battery a full charge using a decent smart charger and see what happens.

There may be something causing battery drain and there are many possible sources but a common one is the upper tailgate switch. It is easily and cheaply replaceable: just pop it out and slot in the new one.

If you try the above suggestions and the problem persists then you need to check the battery drain. Or get a good independent specialist to sort it out. 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

Hi thanks , yes it does only short trips during the week so i will get a smart charger . Also when we got the car the boot light was disconnected , I reconnected it and replaced the bulb . I have now disconnected it again , will also try the switch as you said .

Yes, it is the one with the rubber cover. Ideally, open the upper tailgate, remove the plastic trim and push out the switch from the inside. Alternatively CAREFULLY lever out the switch from the outside but this risks scratching the surrounding bodywork. It will probably be corroded and a bit reluctant to come out cleanly. I did change the upper tailgate switch which was corroded , however if left for more than a couple of days it is still going flat . So I have purchased a smart charger and tend to charge it on a sunday when it mainly does not get used . So I still don't know what else it could be ?

Hi, had the same problem. turned out to be my starter motor. a good shop will be able to confirm the current draw using an amp clamp and pin point the problem. i did it myself because i love a challenge.

Also when you park it do you lower it to access height? This is really important if you you don’t use the car a lot as it will force all the electronics to go into sleep mode, if you leave it in normal height then the electronics will only hibernate and will be looking for your key fob all the time.
Also you could pop into Maplins and invest in one of their solar panel trickle chargers which on your car you should be able to plug into any of the cigarette lighter sockets - cost about £15 but make sure you get one with blocking diodes that prevent battery charge flowing back to the panel at night.......... I used to keep both my 2.7TDv6 and 3.6TDv8 connected up to these when I was way for 5-6 months and never has a problem until I bought later cars with battery management systems that wouldn’t allow the cigarette lighter to remain live when the ignition is off, but I now have a work around for that too in my 2015MY RRS. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it
