United Kingdom 2006 Range Rover Sport Supercharged Santorini Black

If you're looking at the v8 diesel then it would be worth considering the petrol instead, both petrol variants get similar mpg to the diesel but the engines are much more reliable.

If you go for a V6 you want to be sure that it has been well looked after, cam belts done and all the other usual bits and pieces.

I don't have a sunroof and personally I don't think I'm missing much, but be aware that the sunroof drains are renowned for blocking and causing the car to flood, so check the carpets and look for water marks if it's got one.

When you're looking for one make sure to shift from hi to low box. It should be pretty much silent. On the test drive go in to a slow tight circle, going both clock and counterclock wise listening for any clunks. Apply and release the park break a couple of times, it's hard to explain how it should sound, but it shouldn't make any grinding noise. While out on the drive try lowering the suspension to entry hight (you will need to be under 30mph to do this) if it goes down and then wants to return to normal ride height theres a problem.

A final thing to do on the test drive if you can is to either take it to a garage to read any stored fault codes or (if you intend to own a RRS for long I would recommend) buy an ODB fault reader. You will find that pretty much every RRS will have a fault code of some form or other, there are the usual suspects that can be ignored (temporary loss of communication with XYZ module). If it hasn't got any fault code I would be suspicious as they've been cleared, probably to hide something nasty..

Bills for the RRS can get painfully large quickly, so take your time, don't let your heart rule your head and be picky.

Two key reciepts which you want to have had done recently regardless of which ever vehicle you go for (be it petrol or diesel) are the sway bar bushes (these are a relatively regular replacement) and the air compressor.

Other than that they're fairly sturdy machines. They aren't really prone to rust but with having so many electronics they do tend to have the occasional gremlin or two.

Oh and as a closing statement, if at some point you feel you would like to change the head unit on the stereo (rather fugly thing in my opinion) then try to avoid buying a RRS that has the LOGIC7 system. If you don't want to change the unit then the LOCIC7 system was the top of the range ICE for them.

2013 Range Rover Sport SDV6 HSE Stornoway Grey

If you can try get it on a ramp and look underneath for off-roading damage - OK so 98% of them never go further off the tar than the golf course car park but they are hugely capable cars off-road and some of us do take them where they were designed to go.

If is is an early 2005/2006 S,SE or HSE then avoid any with bigger than 19" wheels as those cars had to have a steering rack upgrade or the Dynamic Response Pack to wear anything bigger, the rack was alledged by LR to wear more quickly with 20" wheels and it voided the original warranty. Check also that it is wearing wheels and tyres suitable for the weight of the car, many people think that they can fit budget tyres to them but often they are the wrong speed and weight rating. RRS1 is a 2.6t beast. Check also that the wheels are not copies of LR designs - there are a lot of copies that are not up to the job. Originals have the Land Rover oval cast into them.

If you are looking at a 4.2 Supercharged that is advertised as a First Edition then get the VIN and check it on the Land Rover Topix Website - Black or Silver S/C's can be tarted up to look like First Editions which were very limited number cars - 300 each of Vesuvius Orange (less easy to fake as the colour is a scintachrome paint), Zermatt Silver or Black, worldwide.

If it appears to have a load of electrical gremlins, check that the rear lights are all lit up as a failed lamp in a unit is enough to through up all sorts of warnings on the dash. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it
2018 Melting Silver Mini Countryman PHEV - soon to be replaced
2015MY Corris Grey SDv6 HSE Dynamic, the best car I have ever owned, totally reliable only a cou0le of rattles in 3 years, now no longer in my care
Also in my garage is a 1996 TDi300 Defender 90 County HT made into a fake CSW

Is that really true? The best book figure I saw for the SC 4.2 was 19, and most users report 12-15mpg reguarly. Even with my relaxed approach to fuel consumption I couldnt justify that, so I tested the 2.7 and TDV8, the 2.7 was far too slow for me, so I bought the TDV8. Time will tell how much it breaks, and I would have loved the SC, but Im averaging 25mpg and get 28 on a run...

Ummm, unless you drive the petrol like a Saint and the TDV8 like the Devil himself, then no, the petrols don't get similar mpg. However, if the OP's intended annual mileage is low then the petrols start to become a worthwhile choice. If you're doing commuter mileage then the diesels are a no-brainer.

The petrols do seem to have fewer engine related issues reported hereabouts, however, so that is a fair point. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Service history is crucial. If it's below 100k you can get a warranty for it. There is a buyers guide PDF on this site somewhere.
