But that's the thing, my AMG merc cost nearly twice what the RRS cost new and has cost 1/3 of what the RRS has to run in nearly 4 times the length of ownership and the merc is 5 years older than the RRS.

The only AMG's I can think of that cost circa £140,000 are either an S65 or CL65, which one do you own?

Both are unbelievable cars...

Unnecessary quote removed

By far the worst truck/vehicle i have ever worked on or ever owned and ive owned a heap of cars.

French engine in a LR truck -- the individual who decided that needs a bullet.

I've rebuilt my engine after 19k miles due to crank failure and now its smoking after 110 miles from rebuild. I hate the truck but i also love it. Every time i turn the key it cost money.

I would never advise anyone to buy one of the tdv6 or tdv8,

Pure junk and outrageous design with this body off just to do a basic job, Its pathetic

I've had many 150 quid run around like my 255k dci clio van i got for my dogs and it starts first time every time and its never let me down not once in the 4 years i've had it. 50mpg and you don't have to take the body off to do a small job like a alternator, which also dosnt cost 1500 labour just for body off..........

I've owned 4 x Mercedes estates and now have a GLE SUV over 20 plus years. I only had one front spring went in the alps and Mercedes outside of warranty put us up in a hotel, took the car to be fixed all free except for the actual repair. Contrary to a FL2 which was fine and RRS 2011 HSE had an oil leak £2,500, Car electrics locked down in France last year and we were without the car for 6 weeks as the local LR Dealer kept messing the ecu another £1,000 at that point I went back to Merc. Current Merc GLE 3.5d 2016 model, 2011 RRS HSE standard
Previous 2012 FL2 liked but boot too small
Previous to LR's 3 x Merc E320 estates - fantastic load carriers and long distance cruisers, ultra reliable. Only changed as needed a 4x4 high tow vehicle. Did have a 1955 early LR drop down windscreen and fuel tank under the drivers seat; again very reliable and super rugged.

The only place I would buy a second hand RRS or any other topend motor would be a main dealer with a 2 year warranty, then trade in when 2 year old or extend the warranty,I'm on my 5 RRS plus a few RangeRovers before these & ive never spent a penny on repairs & to be honest I've only had 2 issues with the sports,1st being a parkbrake problem on a 2008 TDV8 & a suspension issue on a 2012 sdv6 & both problems were sorted under warranty. If you can't afford to run one don't buy one.

Yes your right there sir, and what a Censored poor job they did with it.

Anything hdi or know as tdci in fords of course is all throw away after 3 years. Thats why these cars only ever fail just outside of their warranty.

The 1.6 hdi in all citroens and fords and bmw mini ect ect are all Censored .

I love RRS but never again for me. I was going to buy the supercharged but thought it would cost a fortune to run, but even if i bought it, it would of still been cheaper than any tdv6 awaiting a crankshaft failure. Ive built these engines and got to say they are rubbish. The quality of the internal parts are some what like MADE IN THE P.R.C (china as we know it). Terrible quality.

Im in a mood Laughing I got my truck out on the drive, DEAD AGAIN. Ill have a post up shortly

Any cars can have problems. Ive got a bmw, nothing but issues.
I think landrovers go wrong as much as any other car but the more quality the car the more expensive the repairs...

Best motto ive heard about landrovers though...... "you don't buy a land rover for its reliability"

Australia 2008 Range Rover Sport TDV6 SE Chawton White

Still on my first RRS – MY08 TDV6. 263,000km no major problems. Had it since 150k. I’ve lost a lot in depreciation so I won’t be selling it any time soon!
Replaced timing belt/oil pump, alternator, suspension compressor, front LCAs. That’s all.

OEM parts are fairly expensive but I install them myself so save money there and everything is done properly.

It needs new shocks all around and the sunroof is rattling a bit, that’s ALL that’s wrong with it. They do have some weak points, but overall I think they’re well thought out and well built cars and a pleasure to drive, and between these and the D3/4 there’s probably no more practical vehicle out there! Find me another such vehicle by another manufacturer that does not have issues over time. You won’t find any. I’ve spent 3 weekends out of the last month working on an Audi allroad 2.7t that also has air suspension etc. It has long suffered from lack of maintenance and the list of things wrong with it is simply mind boggling. Have barely made a dent to be honest!

That said I’ve also had three Audis of my own, including the infamous B5 S4, all of them have been great cars to own and run. The S4 was slightly more expensive to run than the RRS in this regard. The other two (A4 1.8ts) have been cheap to run. All are high milers with more than 300,000km and I’ve done at least 100,000km in each myself (nearly 200k in one of the A4s).

My local dealer (the dealer for both Audi and LR) I would have to say is absolutely incompetent. If I had to rely on them for repairs I would most probably be in the same boat as the OP. I don’t have time or inkling for that. Far easier and cheaper to buy all the right tools and do the work myself. By the time I’d paid for 2 services with those clowns I could buy my own hoist! MY08 RRS TDV6, Chawton/Black, sunroof, hk, 268k km
2001 Audi A4 1.8T quattro 5mt sport, 340k km
1990 Nissan Pintara TRX, lots of mods, 438k km

I think they're well engineered but then cheaply built - hence common failures on bought in items such as alternators, compressors etc. The TDV8 is slightly different - I think it's been engineered to fit in a too-small engine bay and this has given us a potential turbo failure legacy. Otherwise, they seem pretty well thought out.

The dealerships are very patchy though - a service by a bad mechanic is probably worse than having no service at all. Misaligned oil filters, for example, will quickly damage the engine. I had a steering rack damaged by a LR main dealership when they took the body off to replace my TDV8's turbos. Starter motor was replaced without the breather pipe resulting in premature failure. That was due to a LR dealership getting it wrong. These failures don't necessarily manifest themselves straight away so you end up thinking "this is a bad vehicle" when really the problem is "this vehicle has not been cared for by the garage".

I agree with you RRSTV8. The problem is often that the dealership is fixing something but destroying something else.this is particularly thre whenever a full body lift is necessary, These cars are very complex and most mechanics do not have the needed understanding and supervision. I have noticed this many times and I often try to coach mechanics myself with the right working attitude and i.e simple things like using the right torque settings!
The problem is that everything is commercialized and for every job the exact time is calculated, But finishing a job within that time is often impossible, so rushing is the result. This is also true btw for most German cars. My experience with company cars is that a Toyota Landcruiser is the strongest and most reliable. but I find them pretty boring.
you also need a bit of luck. my reliable 2011 3.0TDV6 broke down at 120K with engine crankshaft failure. LR provided my with a new engine after I escalated the issue to the JLR management.

For a bit of perspective ...

A work colleague has a BMW 520 d (60 plate). the cam chain stretched or snapped, with predictable results (is a simplex one on the 4-pot). On the current models, it's located at the rear of the engine, not at the front. BMW wanted something like 5K to rectify. After a bit of research he found a BMW recommended specialist who would fix it (engine out and refurb) for £3,500.
Apparently, this is a very common failure.

Another friend has Citroen C4 which needed a new clutch. (It's not a new'ish vehicle). The dealer said it's 10 hours labour, as the engine needs to come out. So he took it to an indie, who said the same, but that he won't do it, because they naturally have to unplug lots of connectors, and when they connect it all up again, they can never clear all the faults. This results in all their profit being wasted trying to get it running again.

Just a small sample of other peoples woes I admit, and I do feel peoples pain when faced with repeatedly large bills on a car, but I think we can often be more forgiving of say a German car than we are with a British one. (Just my two-pence worth, please ignore if you like.)

Japanese and Korean made cars can also be a nightmare when things do go wrong, often there is also a very long wait for spares to arrive from the Orient too with 5-6 weeks transit time by sea (Japanese and Korean car makers don't seem to have learned about courier services either so you end up waiting for ships to make the passage from Far East to Europe). They also seem to have short lifespan for their designs making some parts obsolete in 5-6 years unlike European makers. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it
