Auto Low Beam

Hi all.

When AUTO (lighting) setting is selected low beam comes on in low light conditions.

My question is where is the light level "sensor" located and can it be blanked out so that low beam is on at all times when in AUTO mode? RRS (MY13) Santorini Black SDV6 HSE luxuary

When this technology first came in, it used to be in the rear view mirror. (forward facing)

On the RRS I think it is in the rain sensor, so if you put tape over that the rain sense wouldn't work.

I think it's in the middle of the screen where the rear view mirror attaches. You should see small solar type box from the outside. Not sure how you'd blank it to be honest. ON THE WAY: BMW F21 M140i

I thought the rain sensor was the black hatch area at the top of the screen in front of the rear view mirror? 2010 RRS, TDV8

No, it's usually just below the mirror mount.

Not the best picture but,

The Blue/Grey bit is the Rain Sensor, the Lens slightly to the left in the Mirror is the High Beam Assist Lens I believe. You can switch this On and Off via the Menu on the Steering Wheel. I'm guessing the Lens below the Rain Sensor is the Auto Light Sensor or what ever it's called.

Hi Col

Thanks for the photo and explanation.

I don't appear to have the lower lens.

I just have the blue/grey aperture on the mirror attachment and the small aperture on the driver's side of the rear view mirror! Hmmm! RRS (MY13) Santorini Black SDV6 HSE luxuary

Rain and light level sensing is done by the same unit so I don't think blanking would work, but you could verify that by covering the rain sensor with a paper (while wiper is set to off) to see if the lights would turn on.

I wasn't sure what the one below the rain sensor, but as udash picture shows it is a image sensor although I have it on mine I have no idea what image it is supposed to sense. Rolling with laughter According to the W/Shop manual it is all part of the High Beam Assist by detecting the proceeding vehicle Tailights etc. if I understood it correctly.

Cheers

Hi undash & Col

That sorts it then.

I tried sticking a bit of paper over the whole 30x30mm aperture and that definitely achieved the objective of triggering low-beam in all light conditions.

I then tried a small 8mm round adhesive dot bang in the centre of the aperture. That achieved nothing.

Nor have I yet established if I have disabled the rain sensor.

Keep watching this spot for updates. RRS (MY13) Santorini Black SDV6 HSE luxuary

Why not just use the dipped beam light position on switch instead of Auto? Then the dipped beam will remain on unless you use main beam which isn't likely much in daylight, but remains under your control.
Then your rain sensors will still work as they should.

One of the front sensors mentioned is also used to automatically switch on and off of the main beam when driving on dipped, as a car approaches or no cars ahead so safe to switch on again, when you have this facility, a lot of vehicles don't even with auto light switch.

Another front sensor on that unit is also partly used for the auto distance between car in front on the motorways and other features of that system. If you have any of these features please be wary of what you try to cover. Thumbs Up John

Why not just activate the "Scandinavian" setting in the CCF Files and dipped beam will come on irrespective of the position you have the Headlight Switch in as soon as you Start the Engine.

Col, I think image sensor is also the camera that's used for traffic sign recognition apart from AHBA. A loan Evoque I had recently had two such cameras separated by around 6cm and that was used for Collision detection, cheaper and less reliable way of doing it rather then with the RADAR that we have got on ours.
