Hi,
I have a distressing problem developing with the brakes on my 2005 2.7 V6 diesel.

Under most circumstances the brakes are fine, but if I have to make a long, firm stop, say from 60 mph to standstill, the brake pedal sometimes goes solid and I am unable to apply extra brake pressure than that already applied.

It feels as though the vacuum to the servo is all used up and that I no longer have servo assistance.

Before I look into it, I am hoping somebody here can give me the benefit of their experience.

Might it be a faulty servo, or vacuum pump? Where is the vacuum pump?

There is a known issue with oil getting in to the brake servo. Should have been done as a recall so might be worth talking to LR about it. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Ah yes, I wondered about that. I will investigate the servo and see what is going on, I think. It does feel as though vacuum is being lost after a long brake application. On the next application, it has come right back again.

This is def brake booster problem.
You can get a supercharged brake booster for about £40, similar price for the master cylinder. Bodsys Brake Bible

Are the servos and master cylinders available from factors, or are they agent only?

Ebay is ere I sourced mine from. One came from a main LR dealer and the other from a LR parts supplier. All genuine. Haven't really looked for aftermarket ones as at those prices, it was a bargain. Main dealer normal prices are significantly higher! Bodsys Brake Bible

I removed the master cylinder last night to investigate this problem. The servo was half full of engine oil!!

So, I have removed the oil, but obviously need to address the source as well as renewing the servo. Is it likely to be a worn vacuum pump, or is there another reason for the oil to be coming through?

Because the servo functions ok, but loses assistance on a long brake application, I am suspicious that the vacuum pump may be losing efficiency and unable to keep up with demand under these conditions. Is that likely?

After 120,000 miles I think it is not unreasonable to replace both master cylinder and servo and potentially the vacuum pump too, but I am hoping to avoid chasing the problem in circles.

Your collective wisdom is very much appreciated

Given JLR's generally er..... 'relaxed' attitude to things like record keeping, quality control and documentation accuracy I'd say there is a good chance that your vehicle should have had the recall rectification work.

Well I contacted my local dealer and it appears that a recall does affect my vehicle, so I have booked it in and will see what they make of it. The recall is on loss of vacuum assistance and relates to the vacuum pump. So I will be highly delighted if they change it for me for nothing.

Will report back after it has been in.

Have you got any update on this? Im having the same exact symptoms on my 07'. I contacted a LR dealer and they told me this recall has already been done to my car years ago.

So could you advice me what parts should I get to fix this problem Or what did they change on your car.

EDIT2: Also you can hear weird noise when I press brake pedal for a while even when stationary. And this all happens when I press brake for a longer time. Not when its applied for a short period of time.
