MY2010 Gearbox Oil Change?

Chaps,
My car is due a service, and speaking to one or two Dealers/Indys, it is possibly due a transfer box oil change, but one Indy i spoke to said that it will need a gearbox oil change. i thought these were sealed for life? is he talking nonsense?

cheers

I may be wrong here and I'm sure someone will correct me if I am. Initially the were sealed for life however L/R revised this to 10 years or 150k and Transfer box is every 5 years or 75k. The consensus on the Forum is to have them done at a lot less mileage than that.

I think it could be classed as "Preventative Maintenance" having it done sooner, as should help extend life of Transmission and Transfer Box as a few litres of oil is cheaper than replacing either or both of those.

Cheers
Col

Yes, the consensus of opinion over on the Disco Forum is a flush or double change every 60K miles, or less.

"Sealed for life" is the nonsense spouted by LR and going against ZF's advice because it's only once out of warranty that the effects are usually observed. The indy is correct; get it done. Thumbs Up Visiting from DISCO3.CO.UK

In fairness to LR, ZF originally called the gearbox sealed for life. Sadly LR didn't change when ZF altered it to change the oil at 70-80k km.

I had gearbox oil done a couple of times but still ended up with a rebuild being required owing to worn output shaft splines.

I've decided to get the diffs, transfer and gearbox oils done every two years from now. Had the diffs done yesterday when it was in for a service. Gearbox and transfer box done last week as part of the rebuilds.

All of these oils lead a hard life and aren't expensive in the grand scheme of things. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Thanks for the responses guys, I had a look back at my last dealer service invoice to check if the transfer box oil had been changed, the service schedule on topix says it should have been done at 5 years. It wasn't ! (Mine is six years old with 71k miles)
Spoke to my dealer, who said the gearbox oil doesn't get changed, so I'm guessing that they don't care so much about cars over a certain age. I will take your advice about changing the oil anyway, as doing that and a service at the Indy is about the same as a "B" service at the dealer.
Thanks

I think that a failure to do correct routine service items is one of the reasons that LR has a poor reliability reputation. The dealers are basically increasing the likelihood of early failures. Not changing oils is Censored poor really. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

I've just had my rrs08 tdv8 with91.000 miles gearbox oil changed by reputable 4x4 Indy in Peterborough @£375 incl vat which I thought was very good , but reading here about transfer box every 5 years is it something I should have had done as well ?? The Indy never mentioned it ? 🤔 I've also just had engine oil service and new fuel filter and brake fluid changed , tomorrow it gets 4 new AVON zx7 275/45/20 fitted @ £484 incl vat , wow what a week !!!

Going back to the service I've just paid for , would it be too much to expect for the garage to fit a new air filter !! I've just checked and the old dirty one is still in place as I suspected if I'm honest because they hadn't listed a new one on the invoice but surely as part of a service a new air filter would have been part of it or at least to have taken it out and clean out the odd leaf and crap !! I guess you only get exactly what you pay for in life hey !

Officially, the air filter is only down for replacement every 3rd service. Rolling Eyes I do mine at every service, at approx 10k intervals not 15k, which works out a bit over twice a year. Wink

The transfer box oil is very easy to do if not done. Thumbs Up Visiting from DISCO3.CO.UK

Having just had the gearbox flushed and oil changed should I in your opinion have had the transfer box oil changed also at the same time ( having covered 91.000 ) ? I wonder if had I have gone to a main dealer they may have suggested this ? I suppose the list of jobs to do could be endless ie having the diffs oil changed as well ? 😩

You should get it done sometime.

To be fair to the Indy, I guess you are going there to get a good price/deal.

They don't want to hard sell you things you only need doing once or twice. Especially if they are busy.

Shame about the air filter though

Flushed or just changed? If the former, since it requires only a basic level check under the car, then less so. If the latter, then maybe, but still no specific reason why it should be done at the same time. Always a good idea though, and the same with the diffs. Thumbs Up Visiting from DISCO3.CO.UK
