Hi Can anyone help with this, I have just bought an 05 RRS,
it has 22" wheels on and it feels very unstable on uneven road surfaces, if you hit a pothole it seems to veer off in any direction, could this be a shock issue ?
any help would be appreciated before I spend any more money

Welcome to the forum Mark, I hope the following isn't too much bad news...........
2005 RRS was never designed to take wheels bigger than 19" and even then you needed a different steering rack unless you had a 2005 4.4V8, 4.2 S/C, or an HSE with the factory option of the Dynamic Pack that came as standard with 20" wheels and the uprated steering rack. Even then Land Rover dealers would void a warranty if you took your car in with wheels bigger than 20". I would suggest that the 22" wheels and tyres might have led to accelerated wear of the steering rack and you have a lot of play in it..... It wasn't a difficult job for dealerships to change a steering rack and with 2007MY all RRS's got the uprated rack as standard. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

It is a 4.4 V8 so would the option be to get a set of 20" wheels or do you think the damage is already done
to the steering, or possibly look out for a 2007 steering rack and change that ?

Before changing steering rack I would get tie rod ends checked
For play, also control arms, and also make sure sway/anti-roll bar links and bushings are connected and good.
If you brake hard on smooth surface do you hear any clunk ? Does wheel wobble at high speed ? Any competent suspension shop should be able to check this out for you ...

You say you just brought it, was it private or from a dealer?
If it from a dealer I'd take it back to them and let them rectify it.

It was a private sale, the chap did say he had lowered the suspension by 30mm , would this make a difference ?

Almost certainly, especially if he didn't get the alignment sorted out too. Even with the alignment done it'll probably still be bad.

Relatively easy to reset the ride height to the current settings to see if it helps. Alignment will need checking, of course.

On an 05, it's entirely possible that the suspension bushes and dampers are tired too, of course. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Resurrecting an old post as I’ve got a steering wander issue. Obviously I’ve had the alignment checked - it’s currently being looked at for the third time after having it up in the air to check all bushes and joints, which are tight.

Recently had the lower steering u/j done and I’m just wondering if the steering rack could be the culprit. The car is happy on a smooth level road but on any bump it makes a small adjustment in direction so that you are forever doing minor corrections. Travelling down narrow lanes this can be disconcerting.

Any ideas??? Robin
