Neutral... It reduces the wear on the torque converter unless it is the new 8 speed zf.... However there are a number of reasons also why you should leave in neutral

What do you do when you want to set off if you've put the car in Neutral and applied the handbrake?

Was always taught to anticipate the lights by watching the other lights controlling the junction... When they go red I select the gear and release the brake manually.... Just find its smoother and more comfortable for the passengers... Holding it for the few seconds on the footbrake....just prior to the lights changing let off the brake and pull smoothly away.... |

A Land Rover Experience instructor told me that you should normally leave it in D unless you are expecting to be stationary for an extended period of time. According to him the car is clever enough and reduces the drive by 75% when at rest so it is not left battling against the brakes. Never got round to verifying this statement from other sources though. Current: Volvo XC90 T8 Inscription Pro PHEV with some optionals on top

As the manual states, if stationary for a prolonged period then select P or N. I reckon They would expect most folks to leave in D for lights and Junction hold ups. Can't be more than a min or two in most instances. Agree on the foot brake blinding folks behind that's why I select park brake mostly. But even in a manual people use foot brake anyway mostly rather than select handbrake in traffic.

Interesting the putting it in Park debate....not a problem on the 494 but on the earlier cars you give the driver behind a shock as it puts on the reverse lights for a split second as you past the gearstick through P R N D.........

You don't have to own a Ferrari to experience what it's gear box does, my Dad's CVT Honda Jazz frequently drops into N after stopping for a while, it infuriates him and many of his aged friends who also have the same previous generation CVT Jazzes. It's one of the "features" that has lost Honda the alliance of many of the oldies that used to buy automatic Jazzes and are now buying other makes of small cars with conventional automatic gearboxes. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Because they're not torque converter automatics but manumatics with a regular clutch, which would burn into pieces in seconds. It's perfectly OK to leave a torque converter automatic in "D" on lights. In fact, it's less wearing the transmission than engaging and disengaging drive each time the car stops. Tha manual is clear regarding this and encourages shifting to N on prolonged stays, however this does not mean 45 seconds, but rather 45 minutes. Shifting to "P" on traffic lights is just plain lunacy. People think they save the transmission, while actually making it work much harder. There must be a little as if you didn't have your foot on the brake in D it would move forward. |
