Did an oil change today for 1st time nightmare

I have a TDV8 and decided to give it a oil change for first time since I got it ended up with oil everywhere. What a stupid idea putting sump plug on side of sump. I took this out and oil shot all over bottom arms then dripped all over my drive along with spraying everywhere else with the wind blowing it everywhere but in the oil catch can I had underneath.
Also what's the idea of the 2 sump plugs? I took out one facing ground first and hardly anything came out?

Yes it made a mess. I've always done my own oil changes and servicing as I like to know which oil etc is in and enjoy it when I get time but never ended up with half the oil on the drive. The Mrs isn't too happy. Plenty of newspaper and rags next time

Agree it is a silly design. For years now I have always used a massive storage box to catch the oil and even then put big sheets of cardboard over the whole area. Someone at a dealership told me the second plug is something to do with the turbos (maybe the oil feed system?).

Sometimes wonder if garages don't bother with the second plug and thats why the turbo oil feed gets clogged with sludge causing catastrophic turbo failure? 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

For future reference, the oil filter box folds in half, wedges nicely between the sump and chassis, and guides the oil gracefully into the tray underneath Thumbs Up

Cheers Mikey will do that next time.
How often are most of you changing the oil to keep on top? I was thinking around every 5000miles to hopefully keep on top of turbo issues. It had 2 new ones at 43,000 and on 64,000 now so shouldn't get any trouble for a while hopefully.

Change the oil and filter on mine every 5000, use good oil and always drive on light throttle on warm up and let the turbos cool down before turning the engine off (drives the Mrs nuts) sitting there with the engine ticking over but it's cheaper than replacing the turbos. If I ever have problems then it's one of those things but I've done what I could Thumbs Up 2008 G4 RRSport TDV8 current

I change the oil in my own car every 10k miles. The modern intervals of 15/16k+ is waaaay to long, even for having fancy long life oil

If I were running a TDV8, I'd be doing the oil every 6k miles

But the post above is also very wise. I do it with every car I own, petrol and diesel, turbocharged or otherwise Thumbs Up

Planning on doing a interim change on mine shortly, have had the oil for a month but no time to do it as yet! as far as doing it on the drive if i lock it in off road height and chock the wheels is that enough space to get under it? I have a couple of axle stands as well that i can put under the chassis just in case!

is there any pics anywhere of where the sump plugs are or is it obvious once the engine cover is off? and what do i need from the steelers? a filter and 2 sump plugs?

The sunshine got the better of me so popped to the local stealer and got the filter and plugs whilst warming up the motor! put it at off road height and put a old double duvet under the front! oil drained without to much mess, ended up using a more rigid piece of cardboard I had to direct the oil but it worked ok, i need a bigger catch can though! Mine holds around 6 or 7 litres so took no risks and interrupted the flow and drained it a couple of times. new filter and o ring fitted and added 8 litres of oil in, let it run briefly and then checked and added another litre, hard to tell on the dipstick where it is but will check it again after a run tomorrow.

All in all pretty simple to do with no dramas glad i got the first one out the way and now know how to do it!

DM what's the best oil for a 2012 sdv6 as I'm going to change mine,,I've always used millers oils in the past with high performance engines & changed every 5000 & the oil I've removed as always been as clean as when I put it in..also is it advisable to do a engine oil flush.someone mentioned about 2 sump plugs, has the sdv6 got 2.?

Getting underneath the car is old hat now to drain the oil, I always use an oil extractor, no mess and easy to dispose of.
