Emergency Tow Strap

Before I go and pay £60 for this Land Rover Emergency Tow Strap Assembly - STC8919AA, are there better options available? I'm interested only in emergency towing (a few meters only). It might be a silly question, but how is this tow strap attached, is there any screw required to fit on the frame?

Behind the little towing electrics cover, there is a big hook. That can be used for it

Then if you want a strap, cheap on eBay...

Something like that will do and just because it says Landrover on it, won't make it tow easier Wink

It has a hook each end with a safety catch.

@Pufftmw, thanks, what about in front?

@Col, so you think that the LR part is better than say this Pro Comp http://www.amazon.com/Pro-Comp-220000-Reco...000CNGS56?

Cheers!

Pull off the lower cover and you'll find another hook. You want a heavy duty rope from the likes of paddocks etc and a couple of shackles 2008 G4 RRSport TDV8 current

There's another cover below the front number plate. Never taken it off.

Any direct links as there are way too many options?

@Col, have you ever got the chance to use the original tow rope from LR? Any feedback?

I have one of these in my RRS:
http://www.halfords.com/workshop-tools/gar...c-tow-rope
"Rated" to 4 tonnes so good enough for towing a car on tarmac. The hooks fit a typical screw in tow point and the recovery point on the RRS. I've used mine a couple of times in snowy conditions to help people including a US military pick up truck.

I also have a couple of 14 tonne strops and some shackles for off road use but haven't needed to use them yet! Thumbs Up 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

I thought that elastic ropes are not indicated.

Would this in 4m with safety hooks at both ends be ok? http://www.extreme4x4.co.uk/acatalog/DUPLEX_QUICK_STROPS.html

If in doubt try reading the vehicle handbook and all tow loops will be revealed. 07MY RRS TDV6

The Halfords' tow rope is actually a strap which has elastic in it to make it contract when not under tension. The elastic plays no part in the towing operation - it's not a kinetic rope. The benefit of the elastic is that it helps prevent the strap dragging on the floor if the vehicles close up slightly.

As I said, I've found it useful in on-road situations. I've just remembered that I did use it to pull a large Transit type van out of a snowy verge a couple of years ago. If you need to be able to do more than the occasional tarmac rescue tow then you're looking for more heavy duty ropes. Might be worth considering on of the ropes in the group buy on Disco3. There's a link to it in our group buy section too. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

The Genuine L/R one's are only rated at 3,000KG's so not exactly heavy duty.
