2008 Range Rover Sport TDV8 HSE Java Black
engine breakdown

Hello, I have owned a RRS TDV8 now for 8 years and 100k mls without any large issues : 2 new batteries, new alternator and new aircompressor, until now ...

When pulling out of a junction (with normal acceleration), the car lost all power, and began running roughly, I pulled over immediately, and switched off (only 100m further down the road after it happened tried to restart, immediately roughly running, big smelly smoke out of the left exhaust. I cut the engine and knew it was going to be : injector, EGR or turbo.
I had the car towed and examined : TWO EGR valves were seized up, the left turbo was full of oil, even oil in the airbox, and the right turbo was seized up ... Twisted Evil Twisted Evil
OK, bite the bad tasting cheese and cough up 6000 € as repair bill
Today I got the dreaded call : the engine makes loud rattling and ticking noises ...
Anybody out there with the same problem ? (what did you do ?)
Anybody out there who had a recon engine fitted ?

This is in fact my 5th landrover, first a brand new 90TD5, then a brand new disco2 TD5, then bought a 2nd hand Defender 110 300Tdi as a travel vehicle, then bought the brand new RRS TDV8, and now last year bought another Defender with a HD2.8 engine fitted, So I am into the brand (but the brand obviously is not into me ...)
Does anybody have any experience with asking LR about this and what they can do Whistle (or is the car too old ?)

Sorry to hear that. It sounds as if the turbo oil seals failed as a result of a blockage developing in the oil scavenging pipework. It's happened to a few TDV8 engines. If you search the forum posts you will see several similar stories. The garage that did the work are at fault as they clearly didn't properly investigate the damage to the engine. Most likely when the turbo oil seals failed oil was drawn into the cylinders caused a hydraulic lock and damaged a piston or pistons. You have been charged a load of money to have new turbos fitted to a broken engine - take up the case with the garage and if they are not forthcoming with a refund of your money get a good lawyer.

Land rover can supply reconditioned short blocks but they are expensive and of course need to be fitted by someone who knows what they are doing. Assuming your car was serviced in accordance with LR schedule then certainly worth contacting customer service and asking LR to help with cost of repair.

I hope it works out for you. 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

Turbo's

Hi,

don't get me wrong, the turbo's were at fault, the EGR valves also, everything was cleaned (intercooler, piping, inlet manifold, ...) and when everything was mounted back on, and the engine was started for the first time, the rattling and ticking was immediately present.

The guys at the garage take everything back and will only charge me the work for fitting the turbo's and EGR if I decide not to repair.

So this seems as a complete massive failure ...

Do you think only the heads with valves are damaged or also the pistons ?
Are the heads being sold seperately ?

I get that the turbos failed.; was just saying that the chain of events usually starts with an oil sludge blockage of the oil pipe taking oil away from the turbos. Oil is still then being pumped into the turbos but having nowhere to go it blows the seals on the turbos and gets ingested into the engine.

Experts recommend renewal of the oil pipes after this kind of failure or the same might happen again.

I think when others have had this problem damage is usually restricted to cracked pistons and/or bent con rods but I guess if a piston actually broke up then head/valve damage is likely. Stripping the head off will be the only way to find out though.

Hopefully one of our resident experts like Disco_Mikey will pick up on this thread and offer some advice based on much experience. 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE
