Misfire on Start up

Hi Chaps
Just started occurring lately when I start the Sport which is 2006 TDV6.
The engine seems to have like a misfire on tickover, No problems when giving it a rev up,but back to the same on tickover again .seems to go away when car gets up to normal temperature though.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers Jock. Confused

Hi Jock, I think these TDV6 engines are a lottle tempramental when the weather gets down to like 1 degree. I believe its something to do with injectors. Its not really a fault of such I just don't think they cope so well in cold weather.

This was a service bulletin from Land Rover in 2007 for the TDV6 Engine http://www.rrsport.co.uk/gallery/albums/us...0047v2.pdf I'm not Fat. RRS TDV6 HST.

Mine does the same.

What I've started to do is turn the engine so the glow plugs light up and the dash light goes off (I do this 2 or 3 times) - not sure if this is warming them up and extra, sure someone will inform me, but the time the glow light stays on gets shorter.

Then, once the engine is running I just apply light revs to 1000 rpm for about 20-30 seconds. This seems to get rid of the lumpy idle, then I drive to work....

No idea if there's anything scientific in there, but it seems to work??? 2006 HSE for Sale - £7,499 (Manchester)

Thanks very much again lads for the suggestions. Will give them a try .Will locate the Maf /Map sensor and give it a clean.

Can you give any clues as to location and I take it that its only held in with a couple of small bolts.

Cheers again Jock Smile

Hi Jock, when you pull the engine cover off it's on top of the air intake with a plug attached, I think it's a torx screw if I remember .Removed mine and cleaned all the soot of it as it was filthy, also try to clean the small hole out but don't poke with a needle !! Im sure someone will upload a picture of this but I ain't got a clue how to sorry. Thumbs Up 2007, HSE, Cairnes Blue, Factory tints, Love it !!!

Cheers for that

I am off the next couple of days so I will try and get a look at this over these next two days. Always wary when these kind off things start happening in case it is leading to a major fault.

Cheers Jock. Smile

Re misfire on start up

Hi lads

Cleaned the Map sensor yesterday and it seems to have made a bit of a difference although it hasn't cured it fully.
Also noticed that the plug was off the first sensor on the air inlet after the Air Filter box ,which is positioned at front drivers side..Not sure how this has happened or what this sensor is for. Now re-connected . Will run it for a bit and see how we get on.
Is it worth running a diesel cleaner additive through the system or is this not a good idea.

Cheers Jock. Confused

To clarify, you're thinking of the MAP sensor (Manifold Absolute Pressure). Easy enough to clean but don't poke anything into the hole.

The sensor at the air filter box is the MAF meter (Mass Air Flow - measures the amount of air going into the engine). This is very easy to damage but some have had success using electrical contact cleaner. Best not to touch it unless you can guarantee it's the problem. Wink

Jock, when you say plug, I assume you mean the electrical connector? If this is disconnected you're bound to have problems. Thumbs Up

The best thing to run it on is two-stroke oil. 400ml per tank (500 is easier) is supposed to be the optimum amount. It must be JASO FB spec (FC is better or compulsory for DPF cars). Castrol Actevo is FC spec. You'll get more MPG too. Smile

Thanks for the reply

Cleaned the Map sensor when removed with Intake and carb cleaner only, no poking.

Yeah sorry the electrical connector at the sensor just after the air filter box was disconnected ( not sure how long it has been like this ) ,just behind headlight / front grill on drivers side. Never had any alarms or warnings up .

Might be better running it for a bit to see if it gets better now that this sensor is hopefully working after re-connection.

Cheers again Jock. Confused

Re. Misfire on Start-up

Hi Joe

I have just run the car since my last post, The misfire has all but gone and can't believe the difference in performance but I am putting this down to the MAF sensor being disconnected. Its amazing how you just get used to the power you have and don't think there is anything wrong, reckon this sensor has been disconnected for some time.

Haven't run anything through with the fuel for cleaning and a bit wary to look into cleaning the MAF sensor after hearing how delicate it is . Have also noticed that I don't seem to be getting the same cloud when accelerating hard or kicking down.

Still hoping this sensor being disconnected hasn't done any long term damage ,Also due a service shortly so this might help the the tickover even more.

Cheers again for all the help Jock. Thumbs Up
