In Car Head unit replacement issues

Shocked
Hi Guys this is my first post I have taken the plunge to join up since I have had my car for a year now & getting adventuress.
Basically I have installed the new pioneer system with apple CarPlay the AVIC-F960BT & have lost my original Satnav screen due to it all being integrated etc..,etc. & wanted to know what anyone has Installed instead of the original screen which is now blank.
I was thinking of a revers camera with screen but as the pioneer has the faculty to do this I was looking for other ideas.

Please !

Thanks in advance & please be gentle Razz

Hi Roy

I put a TomTom in front of my now defunct screen. I'm much happier with it.

I did look at the feasibility of having another screen installed which could output something else, but as you said, the head unit does it all anyway.

thanks guys, I have seen the picture with the TomTom in front of the original screen but my new pioneer has Satnav so didn't see the point in that for me.

I was unable to keep the top screen working due to the removal of the original head unit due to the fiber optics... so how did you keep your screen working as at the moment the Satnav DVD & Screen still have power as I have not removed them yet ?

How about a 7 or 8" tablet?? It would compliment the head unit and allow you to have navigation without sound on one screen and something else on the other... 2006 RRS S/C CONSTANTLY under modification...

That's a good shout regarding the tablet, I have seen pictures of this but not sure how easy this would be to install / remove and make it look good !

It's a fairly easy job, plenty of threads on here, including for the iPad mini. Important is to find one that fits. I know that sounds daft but different tablets fit better or worse. An example is the Note 8.0 from Samsung and the iPad mini, both 8" screens but the iPad mini fits and the Note doesn't, or least not without cutting huge bits out of the AC ducts on both sides.

The older Nexus 7 also fits better than the new Nexus 7. I fitted a Tab 7.7 with the dock connector, which was a perfect fit, but decided against it as because it was meant to be my primary screen and interface and I felt the distance to great and I had to 'reach' to operate it. That's why I went for installing my phone on the leading edge of the plastic surround:

Just Google "tablet install in Range Rover Sport" and you'll find plenty of ideas and directions. I quite like this install, but the finishing would need to be better around the 'slots' and the dock connector to give a more OEM feel to it:

Hope that gives you some inspiration Wink

No probs Royrw Thumbs Up

Another thing to bear in mind is that if I'm not mistaken on Android tablets with later operating systems, I think 4.2 you can no longer get audio out through the micro USB port, therefore you'll have to use either a BT receiver connected to the AUX in of your stereo, or hard wire it from the 3.5mm jack.

With the hard wire option you obviously will need more space useless you hack the jack to bits to get a very tight 90 degree bend... Same goes for the mirco USB for the power really.

Here's the iPad mini install from Scottypaul:

I had the standard head unit with Bluetooth for phone connection only, the AUX wires had not been connected to the back of the unit's harness so it had to go but not sure weather I can get the old screen up & running with coupling the fibre optics together ?? & does anyone know where I can get a picture of the back of the screen to see what the inputs are ??

Here you go:

Bottom middle with the orange cables is the FOC connector for the MOST.

Top right are the 3 FAKRA input connectors for 1) Companion Cam, 2) Reversing camera and 3) TV I think. Not sure which order either I'm afraid.

The grey and blue connectors I can't help you with, but guess the grey is power and CAN-BUS etc, blue GPS??

Regards
