Compromising question

This question has been asked in a number of different ways so please bear with me whilst I try to word it so I don't get a barrage of abuse!

I am looking for a RRS with no more than £20k. I really am after a 3.0 TDV6 but I am learning that it would be easier to plat snot! A 3.6 TDV8 would be great, but I think the fuel economy would be too much for the high miles I may end up doing in it, not withstanding the higher insurance, tax etc.

So, that leaves the 2.7 TDV6 of which there are numerous, but I read that the engine is not ideally suited to the RRS and under powered. Whilst I am not after a performance car, I do want some ability to overtake before the road runs out!

So here's the all important question (gulp!):

Would a 2.7 TDV6 with a remap be a good compromise?

Please don't shoot me down

You have to go and test drive one and satisfy yourself on whether it has enough power. Everyone has different views for instance if you have just stepped out a a super charged RRS it would probably feel gutless. The only persons opinion that matters is yours Thumbs Up

But I would be careful about driving a TDV8 unless you plan to buy one, they are addictive. It's like going to look at a puppy for sale, you have to buy it when you see what it's like.

Good luck.

Good advice. I shall borrow my mates Citroen C1 when I go for a test drive in the 2.7 - that should hopefully make it feel quicker!

I've owned both the TDV6 and TDV8 and my only word of advice is whatever you do; don't test drive the TDV8 first because if you do, when it comes to test driving the TDV6 you'll think it's faulty.

MPG is roughly the same, the TDV8 is marginally better in my experience; I could never seem to get late twenties in the V6 on a run, yet the same sort of journey in the V8 will return 27-30mpg.

The only real potential extra cost on the TDV8 is that it's a twin-turbo unit, whereas the TDV6 is single.

Forget the C1 and go in a Sinclair C5 and I can promise you it will feel as quick as a GTR Rolling with laughter

Why do you say it would feel faulty?

Were you happy with your V6 when you had it though?

I have only got experience of the 4.2 supercharged RRS but I have been a passenger in a 2.7 tdv6 Disco 3.

These cars do a great job of masking their speed, they are cruisers rather than sports cars. The speed is definitely there in the supercharged, the needle on the speedo can move around at quite an astonishing rate but you don't get the sensation of massive speed that you would in a low and stiff sports car.

My daily drive is a 1.2 peugeot 208 and that can feel quicker at times due to how you can throw it around.

As others have said the 2.7 may be what you are looking for, a lot of other people must think its adequate judging by the amount of them on the road. It's definitely worth test driving as many cars as you can with the different engines to find out what suits you best.

Because the TDV6 is about 80bhp down on the TDV8 which in a circa 2.5 ton 4x4 is very noticeable IMO.

Was I happy with the TDV6 at the time? Errr...yes and no; a 4x4 by it's very nature isn't really meant to be a fire breathing supercar but my the same token it needs to be able to hustle when it's needed. Thinking back, there were a few times when the lack of power annoyed me (overtaking on a country lane springs to mind) yet I've never once had the slightest hesitation in the TDV8; I'll see a gap and I'll be confident I can make it.

I had a 2.7 TDV6. I felt the power was adequate for my general use. Overtaking on single carriageways was the only time I wished it was quicker. I was getting 27-28mpg combined (on the computer) which I thought was really good.

Oh and I agree with the comment that these cars mask their speed. About 5 days into owning my 2.7, I was caught doing 97mph on the motorway. I had no idea I was going that fast as it didn't feel like it Embarassed I did up to 130mph on that car on the Autobahns and felt confident.

It all depends on how YOU feel when you test drive one.

You get 30mpg from a TDV8? What do you do - turn it of going down hills? Shocked 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Ive just had mine remapped by Superchips and it changes the car totally. Responds better, pulls harder and gives you that confidence when over taking. Highly recomend it.

I have a 2.7, and I have always had bigger petrol cars usually in the 3-6 litre range (Yanks, Jags and Mercs mostly) over the years by way of comparison to what I consider normal.

I agree with the poster above who said this:

Quote:

Day to day it is OK, once you get to live with the foibles like the jerky gear change at low speeds. Overtaking here and there it sometimes lacks the punch, and on the motorway, sudden acceleration just isn't happening. But you can wind it up slowly and surprise yourself when you see the needle over 100 at times.

Personally, I would get a V8 next time. But the 2.7 is not poor enough to consider changing it before time. Fuel economy seems OK (dunno the number but I fill it up less frequently than other stuff I have had).

All in all its a positive experience that is only lacking the odd moment here and there.
