Multi Height Towbar - detachable !!

Hi , I am new to this forum. Having had 2 older RRS I have recently taken delivery of a 14 plate HSE.

I ordered it with the multi height tow bar, as at the time of ordering could not justify the cost of an electric one. ( they have since halved in price ). To my horror it arrived and the tow bar is detachable , not bad you would think, but there is no lock. All that holds it to the car is a pin. This means you can remove the tow bar and anything attached to it in less than 10 seconds. perfect for thieves.

Has any one else got the multi height tow bar - did they know it was detachable - are they complaining about it. ?

Have written to Land Rover and they are hiding behind ' conversations held at time of purchase !!

If its that easy to detach just take it off when you're not using it. RRS P460e
1983 2 door Range Rover ARB Bar X9000 winch ARB Rear Bar now semi retired.
Many big trips done in this one.
1982 Rangerover nearly restored.
22 Defender D250 with lots of stuff for outback touring
Nice 2013 Freelander TD4 manual (for daughter to learn on) with much better stereo compared with previous SD4 SE with Meridian which sounded bad!
2013 Land Rover Defender ute.

HI, When not I use I do detach it - the problem is when you have something on it like a bike rack or trailer. Once parked up it is so easy to steal the item attached to it. This is the part I am finding frustrating.

Hi Photo as taken at about the same angle as the Land Rover brochure. You will notice the silver 'ring'. this is the pull tab for the 'lock' . Pull this and then pull the big locating pin from the other side.

Using two hands I am now down to less than 5 seconds !!

Looks like LR are keeping all accessories like lights, spare wheels, grills and now tow bars readily removable.....

How can any engineer or designer think any of this is a good idea, have they recruited someone in from Lego.....

The tow ball isn't the only part though. There is a sub frame that has to be added behind the bumper surround.

For a "practical" 4x4, it really is ridiculous that you have to add a whole new sub frame in order just to add a tow ball. I guess it's just another example of LR realising that its core market is "school run / city" 4x4 rather than "practical" 4x4 - they know that most won't tow so they can save weight and improve economy for the EU (and other) official figures.

It does make me wonder what the Defender replacement will be like... Big Cry 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Cange the quick release clip and use a small padlock.
