Hi guys new in here and need advice.

Hi Guys,

Well I currently drive a volkswagen touareg but looking to change to a RRS got my eye on a 2006 model with 98k miles. Any advice on what I should be looking out for?

Cheers!

Full service history is essential.

Make sure the belts have been changed (7 years or 105k miles whichever comes first. For a 2006 RRS they should have been done fairly recently). If not - it should be factored in to the price you pay.

Check everything works. Make sure the suspension raises and lowers fully. Make sure the transfer box will change from high to low and back to high. Make sure every electrical bit works.

If it's running on 20/22inch rims make sure the steering rack is the later, damped, version. Early RRS didn't have this unless supplied with 20in rims from the factory.

Early examples suffered from paint contaminating the oil in the diffs. Should have been sorted and noted in the history if it's one of the affected examples.

There are lots around - don't fall for the first one you see. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Australia 2010 Range Rover Sport Supercharged Java Black

Hi Fraser and welcome.

If we all had a Scottish Poond for every time somebody comes onto the forum and asks this question, there would probably be a Poond for every member!

That's probably why you have no got too many replies thus far.

There is lots to look out for, too much for any single person to post. Have a wee search on the forums, there will be lots to learn. I would spend a month just looking around here before you buy, there's lots to learn.

Although some would disagree with me, I would nay touch a 98k mile RRS, unless I had lots of Poonds to spend on potential maintenance. If I had lots of Poonds, I would buy an RRS which was newer and had less miles. But that's just me. Gone - 2008 Stornoway Grey RRS 2.7 TDV6

Looks too pimpy in my opinion.
I don't like the black wheels and smoked front and rear lights.
Also I notice there's no nav antenna on the roof, for HSE spec I'd want all the toys.

Being one owner is a positive, nobody keeps a problem car that long.

At the end of the day it's you that needs to be happy so if it suits you, go for it Thumbs Up

Nik.

P.S. Make sure the service history is up to date, belts etc.... 2015 Golf R DSG

England 2005 Range Rover Sport TDV6 HSE Siberian Silver

Hi mate- bit gangsta for me but whatever floats your boat, would look much better with silver wheels. I think it's expensive- I recently paid that kind of money for a 55 plate with 66k on it. It should have sat nav if it's a pukka HSE. 15-16k would be a more realistic price IMO. As said, one owner is good. Should have had the belts done, and may be in the lower road tax bracket.
Good luck

Agree with the first reply, make sure everything works.....when I bought mine I had faulty parking sensor, faulty door actuator, and sticky egr valves. Having said that it had full lrsh and I paid about £5000 less than forecourt price by buying private. Take your time to get the right car, it took me 6 months to find mine.I personally also think the car your looking at is a bit too pimped up but thats a personnal choice, as long as the works done properly. I always buy private and totally standard, do any mods myself if needs be. I've got AA parts and labour cover, less than £100 per year and pays for repairs up to £500. You want this! In the last 2 years ive had battery, alternator, electronic parking brake actuator all replaced on this policy. Finally, stay away from main dealers and find yourself a good 4x4 specialist. You dont need polished floors to be a good mechanic. Check for uneven tyre wear, 4 wheel alignment is often required and to do the job properly requires land rover computer software. Cost about £80 if you can find someone to do it right (theres a guy in Malvern who knows what hes doing). You can do a lot of work yourself with the help of google, ive fitted side steps, parking sensors, door actuator and blanked off my egr valves and im no mechanic. Sorry for the lengthy reply, wife and daughter are watching Disney films!!

Personally I'd stay way from cars that owners have played with. While there are exceptions in my experience often the changes are cosmetic and spending on real care and maintenance is frequently neglected. You'll need to inform your insurers of all the modifications.

If you're buying a car that's over 5 or 6 years old I'd try and find one that's has lots of history, has been kept pretty much as standard and I'd try and talk to previous owners - genuine people are usually willing to help.

I recently bought a BMW X5 from a BMW dealer. Described as 1 owner, 8,300 miles full service records. The car was in fact 2 owners, the mileage (checked by HPI) said it had done 8,500 (i.e. -200 odd miles in 6 months). I contacted the original selling dealership who said it was their demonstrator and they knew that the owner had an accident and the RSA had written the car off _ I wrote to the owner and he sent me photos of the wreck! Obviously I took the car back for a full refund - they have sold it again because I checked the DVLA and its been taxed !!

This was from a main dealer so trust no-one do your own checks; bear in mind that HPI and Insurance databases can be out of date. Also note HPI indemnity stops at £30k.

Very much agrees with RRSTDV8- that's looks like a lovely motor and a fair price. And a sunroof which I think is a great extra.

IMO it irrelevant if someone has made it look gangsta! That doesn't mean they will have neglected the rest of the car.

For me if someone has the money to gangsta the outside they will have looked after the rest of it, drug dealers living on council estate arnt short of a few quid you know.....

The main points for me are full service history with everything done, full mot, test drive to check for rattles, give the owner an attitude check (providing its a private sale). Make sure everything works inc windows etc.

Everyone likes different styles of cars but for me it would be worse to see the car fitted with some really good off road tyres as it would indicate it's been used off road a lot more (damage to the underside of the car, worn components, maybe not washed all the mud off properly so more rust, etc) for me that's more of a put off than a set of black wheels and a can of tint spray.
