Have a knocking noise coming from rear of RRS S/C so got it up on ramps to check for worn bushes etc. All OK, so it seems. Noticed these two great big lumps of steel either side of towbar behind rear bumper, which swing and hit the exhaust tail pipe on one side and the bumper plastic on the other, causing these noises. BUT, I can't for the life of me work out what they are and what they do !

I beleive they are the harmonic dampeners, there to reduce noise though they shouldnt be banging things

They are pendulum weights and are there just to reduce acoustic resonance (they counteract resonate frequency vibrations coming off the frame of the truck.) Mass dampers seem to be the term.

I was just about to ask the very same question, I noticed them earlier when giving the under carriage (the cars not mine) a clean.

Mine are loose and swing about a lot (again referring to the cars dangly bits not mine)

I suppose a solution could be to stick some dense sponge/foam on them at the points they make contact with the surrounding areas. Might reduce the noise they make when they clatter the surrounding metal. TDV6 HSE - Rimini Red

well, to test that these were the cause of the knocking, I stuffed a few old rags around them, and the noise all but went, but the one is too close to the exhaust tip to keep something stuffed in there for too long - unless I wanted flames coming out of my exhaust !  RR Sport Supercharged Vesuvius Orange 4.2 V8 First edition

Are the exhaust tips the original fit items or aftermarket replacements? 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

They are there because it was a cheap fix for LR as they couldn't be bothered to design out the harmonics so the easiest way was to hang some heavy weights in various locations to 'tune' out the unwanted sympathetic vibrations. They obviously contribute to why the RRS weighs so much as you're carrying around several kilos of deadweight.

If they are swinging about relatively loosely its because the rubber bush(s) has deteriorated.

I've a feeling I've seen a note suggesting that if owners complain that dealers can remove them - but t'was some time ago so I could be wrong/out-of-date.

Just had a peep underneath and sure enough mine swing like the 60s!!

I wonder if that explains the rumble I can hear going over bumpy roads ?? I assumed it was bushes but they seem ok. Mines in for 75k service in a couple of weeks I'll see what they have to say about them then.

Try swinging them, do they hit anything. Mine hits the bumper, but I think I have an aftermarket HST bumper so may be nearer the dangly bits !

so if you hear a noise that you think is something banging around in the boot - you got "swinging danglies" at your rear !

Yep mine swing happily - the nearside seems to bang the underside of the car and the offside catches the rear bumper and the underside of the car.  FF 4.4 V8 Soooo looking forward to this bad boy
