Service history issues...

Not a happy bunny.

I bought my RRS from lookers park royal last year. It's been great. A few niggles but James sorted everything, as expected as he's an all round nice guy!

It's a shame lookers park royal reputation has seemed to leave with James!

I was sold the vehicle a year ago with "full service history"

Maybe this is my fault, however I didn't check this out. I've taken their word for it. Anyway.. A year on and it's in for its 6 year service. I take the service wallet out the boot (it hasn't been touched since the day I drove it off the forecourt) and realised there's no service history book?!

I've rang LPR and they've told me they can send me a new replacement booklet with stamps for all the times they have serviced the vehicle, however by the sounds of it not all work has been carried out by LPR.

They also charged me a tenner for the pleasure!

So essentially they've mis-sold me a vehicle. The guy on the phone wasn't interested.

I've send a pm to Customer relations so will await their reply.

I'm concerned as this will dramatically affect the resale value, surely!?

Any thoughts guys?

Bought, That's what it says!

Whistle

My main issue is that I won't be able to say its got FSH when selling on. Something that will reduce its worth?

Who was the sales guy that handed over your motor? Every sales guy that has handed over my motors has always gone through ALL the documents with the car and ive always been shown how all the controls work on the vehicle before letting me drive away. Perhaps the hand over sales guy was having a lazy day the day you picked your motor up or LPR need to change their hand over policy. I'm guessing it wasn't James that handed over your car then. As a good will gesture they really should sort out your service book foc.

No, it definitely wasn't james. As I say, he's been great. Even now! I know if he was there it would have been sorted within seconds.

They just didnt seem interested. I paid, as I want to see how many of the services LPR have carried out. I am just concerned as the guy on the phone made it sound like not all have been carried out at LPR.

At he end of the day, a tenner is a tenner. What worries me is that if not all services were carried out by LPR I now have a range rover with gaps in its service history.

Personally I wouldn't dream of buying a car like this without FSH.

The service book wasn't shown to me. I guess you live and learn. I'm only in my twenties so this was the first vehicle I've ever purchased from a Dealership!

Not as strange a problem as you'd think.

I was 'sold' two sports by a LR dealer which were advertised has having 'full service history'. However I made it a condition of purchase that I saw and checked the service book before I took delivery.

The first had not been serviced for 22 months (15,000) and then twice with 5,000 miles - LR said they would not cover any engine related problems so I walked away from that deal!!

The second Sport they offered me was on the Forecourt and advertised as FSH but they did not have the service book; so I agreed to buy it on the proviso I could check the service book before taking ownership. Two weeks later the 'book' showed it had not had its first service until it had 22,000 miles and it was 2 years old. I I walked away from that deal as well.

When I spoke to the Dealer's manager and said I thought they were wrongly advertising cars as FSH he said I was being fussy Shocked

With LR and 3rd Part warranty companies being very picky over claims my advice is to walk away from any deal where the service paperwork is in anyway dubious.

I'm shocked!

Well, I'll await customer relations reply and also the service book. If it shows a FSH then it's a lesson learned. However if there's gaps then I will kick off.

Arn't ALL L/R that are on a L/R forecourt L/R approved ie all checks carried out so that it is squeaky clean with proof of all service records upto date and complete before they can put them on a L/R forecourt for sale, and class them as Land Rover Approved, otherwise they block them or pass them to other traders.

I'm not sure how thorough they are. Within 400 miles of purchase mine needed new rear pads/discs/shoes

James had the vehicle picked up from me (80 miles away) repaired and sent back to me!

As I say, he was great. Can't say a bad word about him at all.

Incase you read this!!!

I had a similar issue to this a while back when I bought a Subaru. The FSH turned out to be not that which is a longer story.

The supplying independent referred me to a main dealer who when I went in there with the V5 provided me with a printout of the vehicles service history within the dealer network. They wouldn't stamp the new book up for jobs they hadn't done and actually that would have looked a bit strange but the printout provided the detail I wanted.

If yours is 6 years old I'm guessing that LR Customer Services ought to be able to do similar for you?

If the vehicle's been into an independent at any time then you'll struggle to get help from LR but do a bit of digging in what paperwork you have, any details on the rear of tax disc holders, old MoT's etc?

Failing that, write to the previous keeper and ask.

I think you'll get what you are after, just a shame you'll have to do the legwork.

Shame LPR don't want your repeat business...

I know Ady that's the theory and what the marketing blurb says the reality is different. Two personal RR sport' experiences

First -different mileage and number of owners to advert, on delivery the rear antiroll bar was covered in hydraulic fluid, wrong battery and battery loose, front height senor fault, tow ball missing. Suspension compressor and alternator failed inside 2 months.

Second - Registration number and mileage different to advert; FSH not to LR requirement, spare wheel missing, different wheel to advertised (19s not 20s) and to the factory's build spec. (the dealer can get a print out from the chassis number)

I now ask to see the car on a ramp before doing the deal and then check all the paperwork matches the car and then see in on the ramp again before collection - they don't much like it but its my cash Laughing

Not uncommon it seems - mine came from Lookers too (not LPR) and it had missed a service. They serviced it before delivery and it then needed another service within 3 months to put it back on track. Never had any problems with warranty work - and lots of it ! Whistle FF 4.4 V8 Soooo looking forward to this bad boy

You have my sympathy. Found myself in a slightly similar situation buying my car from an independent. The service portfolio was 'with the previous owner' after a long saga of excuses (which were so bizarre it is hard to believe they weren't true) dealer admitted service book was lost. I threatened legal action and after a bit of negotiation settled out of court with a combination of cash and a warranty. The law is strongly on your side although the value of a service history is hard to prove since there is no data. The best I could find was this survey: http://www.icmresearch.com/car-maintenance-survey basically says 35% of people wouldn't buy a car without a service history or would expect to pay 15% less for it. I strongly recommend you speak to Citizens Advice Bureau I found them extremely helpful - and its a free service.
If you can prove with documentation or copy of web page LPR advertised the car as FSH it will help your case.

Few things I found out you might find useful:

Service books are like cash - never let it out of your sight - they are very frequently stolen; even at franchised dealers.

LR do not keep central service records (but can tell if you any outstanding recalls).

Only LR dealers can buy replacement service books that aren't overstamped with 'duplicate'and LPR should jolly well get you one.

DVLA will give you the names and addresses of all previous owners if you fill in the form on their website and send with a cheque for £5

If you ring round LR dealers near the previous owners addresses you might get lucky and they may have serviced it and will stamp the new book for you. (I only found one that wouldn't even check their records claiming it breached the Data Protection Act - which is rubbish but what can you do?).

If you ring or write to previous owners most will try to help you by giving you useful information.

Independent garages usually also have computerised records and can supply duplicate invoices and stamp your new book.

Other sources of information might be found from stickers in the window, invoices tucked into the LR Book pack etc.

Good luck, I am sure you will get something from LPR like a warranty or free servicing and/or cash but you'll have to make it crystal clear you will take to a small claims court if they just ignore you. Mark all your interim communication 'Without Prejudice' and keep copies of everything. 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE
