You can tow it no more than 50km at not more than 50km/h if all 4 wheels are on the road. It's in the book... 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

the engine has gone pop so now need to source a new engine.

best quote so far is £1800 for fitting and £4000 for an engine... think i might be hitting the gin soon!

ugh, did you only buy it 6 months ago too?

I don't think I could risk running one of these without a full warranty from what I've seen so far

Scotty, sorry to hear that... it sounds like the cam belt gave up and left you with a pile of scrap twisted metal for an engine?

Would like to hear more on the diagnosis from the garage as to what happened. 6/7 years 90k miles isn't a lot from an engine, but if it was the cam belt then may it be a lesson to us all to get this dealt with earlier than as advised by LR. If you could confirm Scotty?

Essentially the prices indicated are probably as one would expect for installation of a recon engine and swap over all the bits and commission. Not a nice cost to face though! 2018 RR Velar R-Dynamic, Silver/Ebony, Privacy Glass, lots of toys

A recent spate of blown engines on here should be a big concern for us all

I remember a watchdog programme raising this years ago on the Td5 engines and it looks like it has been carried forward - another characteristic me thinks Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW

The vehicle is 7 years old (according to the OP's avatar) so it is due a change. And apparently it was booked in to be done in April. So in fairness to LR, the thing has gone right about the time it was due to be changed. I tend to go early on cambelts because the potential fallout from them is so great but that's maybe just me.

I notice that some manufacturers now recommend age or mileage for cambelts. I think VAG now say X miles or 5 years. That shouold catch a few people out.

It might be worth the OP having a word with LR about some help with the costs if the vehicle has been serviced correctly and the belt change isn't late. If it's late then all bets are off, of course. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

These engines are notorious for having the main engine and conrods bearings failing.
Somehow, somewhere in Range Rover they have got this critical part of the engine wrong with countless amounts of engine failures now!

Hi guys,

Spoke to the garage today and it wasn't the belts that gave way, it was the oil pump casing breaking or something. Maybe someone could fill me in with what actually happened?

The oil pump casing has a lug with a threaded hole in it, that is the mounting for the timing belt tensioner. This lug is not man enough for the job on pre '09 TDV6's. (LR have changed part no's several times on these oil pump casings, so they know damn well about the weaknesses of these components). The cast alloy lug fractures and of course the belt tensioner falls away,losing belt tension, then parts of the engine go bang due to untimed contact. The worrying thing is, that you can have the timing belt etc changed, thinking you are wise and erring on the side of caution, then 1000 miles or whatever later, this lug fractures with the same catastrophic result as the belt snapping. Personally i would expect L/R to be picking up the bill for a nw engine then if they are fully aware of these failures maybe a recall should of been released.
