2008 Range Rover Sport TDV6 SE Stornoway Grey
do tdv6 range rover sports use oil ?

I have a 2008 tdv6 range rover sport and sent it to the dealer for service in October and noticed engine oil was on minimum on dipstick today. its been 3months since service and lost about 1 litre but is this normal or does it need investigating ? 2008 range rover sport FANTOM styling

TDV6s with DPFs actually tend to gain oil between services. It's not actually oil but fuel that has found its way to the sump - the regen process injects a bit of extra fuel to get the DPF temperature up (well that's how it works on my Jag XJ and it's the same basic engine - our RRS TDV6 is an early one without a DPF). As a result and to prevent problems with oil levels getting too high between services the engine should be filled only to between min and midway.

Unless of course you checked it just after the last service then bang goes that theory!!

Not sure the 2008 RRS had DPF fitted. Mine doesn't. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

All engines can be expected to use some oil yes. Oil and any reservoir should never be overfilled, but should always be close or at maximum levels, not only does this allow you to use oil without running dry, but operating at certain angles requires a good res balance.

If you get fuel in your oil sump, your about to shagg your engine, engine oil sump is for oil, cleaner the better. Mike

What you need to keep an eye on is excessive use or sudden drops Mike

I would have said a litre in 3 months is quite high?..especially as you've only done 1200 miles....

Are those 1200 miles made up of lots of short trips?

Certainly keep an eye on it... mine drops a litre over 12 months usually, 15k miles. RRS gone

I've had my 3.0TDV6 for just over 3 months now, it was serviced before delivery, and I've covered about 1600 miles since then.

I've checked the digital read-out pretty much every week after the 1st month, and its still showing the level as max. 2016 VW Golf GTD DSG
