Electronic Park Brake (EPB) problem.

Hi guys!!

I have a RRS MY-06, and the following happened one day.

I had stopped at a moped-dealer, and after doing some business there,
I started the car to get home.
I had the EPB activated, and gave a little gas, to get it to release, as normal.

I was in reverse, and the brake released, or so I thought, the car started to move,
but with a sound more like a cat set up in a lathe, screeching horribly. Shocked

I stopped, and the sound stopped, but the dash lit up with both amber, and red
warning about Parkbrake, and also a message in the LCD-panel, about me not having any
Parkbrake. Sad

When I came home, I tried to engage the brake, but no, only Warninglamps, and message.

I have now "disabled the brake" by when ignition off, pressed the releaseswitch, and holding it down
when putting ignition on.

Now I wonder, can You by this imformation tell what has failed?
Is it brakeshoes, or the actuator?

Would be most happy for tips..

Best regards

Uffe. As a rule, I always resist temptations,
unless they are irresistible.

Sorry, can't help with any advice on the problem but the above is very interesting..

Is this a "known tip" that can be effected on all Model Year RRS's ? Confused

If so, anyone know the reverse process to "re-enable" ? Carl

The most likely things are, either the handbrake shoes require adjustment, so that the actuator doesn't try to overtravel (causing the screeching noise), or (as in my case) the shoe linings on one side had disbonded and disintegrated to a pile of dust causing the same screeching and overtravelling. Continuing to apply the park brake in this condition will eventually damage the actuator. I recommend perusing 'Bodsy's Brake Bible' on here, an excellent guide on how to strip down /clean / replace / the park brake shoes (and main brakes), and then adjust them correctly so as not to screech on application. Or if you don't feel confident, take it to a dealer, but be warned, even they do not always get this right (my problem was caused by dealer not adjusting p/b shoes correctly)Thumbs Up RRS TDV8 Buck Blue (no, not now in my dreams). ..........D3 TDclankety clankV6 ............BMW 318i

IMO the drive-away capability on the EPB should only be used when going forward. You need to release the brake before reversing; it spund as if you've damaged the auto-release mechanism.

I've had the 'squeeling cat' problem. As texstar said above it was the actuator that had failed due to incorrect adjustment of park brake. Land rover wanted £1100 to sort out, Land Rover specialist £800. Apparently caused by the parking brake not being adjusted correctly during service.

I had a problem recently when parking brake engaged with a horrible noise but won't release making even more noise. Turned out the brake shoes had some mud left in them after offroading and were overheating on every park brake application. One of the shoes had eventually disintegrated but had damaged the disc too. Rear discs and shoes needed to be replaced.
