Emergency park brake application

Has anyone ever tried the emergency park brake application ? If I remember correctly, pulling the parkbrake lever at speed will perform and automatic emergency stop.

I'm sort of curious to try it, yet don't really want to Confused

Would be useful to know how well it really works in an emergency, rather than pondering over it at the time I guess Whistle

Any experiences ?

They did this on my LR expierience day - very impressive, we were doing about 70 with the demo guy driving and he told me to pull the handbrake as if he had frozen/heart attack or whatever. It all stopped pretty quickly. I don't think he had to do much correction to the steering etc. but in a real situation I think I'd have been able to do it anyway.

He kept his foot on the gas by the way but all the electronics kicked in, abs activating as well.

Find a quiet spot and give it a go. What could possibly go wrong Shocked

I haven't actually tried it in my car Very Happy

Hope that helps Thumbs Up

Richard

ive done it at 60mph to test it, just applies the normal brakes (sharply!) but brings it to a stop all under control, its a bit wierd, but works very well. Thumbs Up Bodsys Brake Bible

I've done it. It's impressive in the way it works. Basically it just chucks the anchors out and uses the ABS to control it all - it's an emergency stop just as if you had buried the brake pedal. And it does it even if you have your foot on the throttle pedal.

Go on, play. You might learn something. Just do it on a straight bit of road with little, if any, camber and make sure there's no one behind you.

You need to hold the switch up for 3 seconds (I think) before it activates the system. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Not sure of the logic of the emergency brake in an emergency - even though you actually pull the handbrake lever it activates the main brakes - now the only real reason you would want to use the emergency brake in an emergency is if the main brakes have failed so how does the emergency brake work in these circumstances???

That's a pretty long time to wait in an emergency !

I guess it takes all the guesswork out of the equation, pull lever and hold on, it will brake the car in the most efficient way possible (caveat above 3 seconds delay). Sure, planting your foot on the brake pedal is technically easy, but when ABS kicks in, how many people wonder what is going on and potentially lift from the brake pedal ? I also saw it first in a Passat we hired years ago, so not just a LR thing.

accelerated stop. I've never used it in anger but can perfectly imagine reflex pull on the handbrake from speed, say, on the motorway Thumbs Up

if I remember correctly the ABS system is utilised to bring the car to a stop as quickly as possible - Bobby has the details! Thumbs Up ============

But if the main brakes have failed how is the emergency brake going to work. 07MY RRS TDV6

I'm not sure it's designed as a "when the main brakes fail" type thing. But (I'm sure Bobby can explain better) the mechanism can likely also use the traditional handbrake. ============

here we go:

>>>
If you pull the parking brake lever at any speed above 6 mph, the EPB module will electronically request the ABS module to apply brakes to all four wheels. When the car comes to a complete standstill, the hydraulic pressure from the ABS module is released and the parking brake engages normally on the rear drums. It's called "Dynamic Braking".

The system is very sophisticated: During dynamic braking for example, the EPB module also monitors the deceleration ratio through the wheel speed sensors, and if for any reason (because of a defective ABS module, complete hydraulic failure or faulty CAN bus communication between the two modules, all of which would cause ABS not to operate as requested) it detects that the car is not slowing down at a specific rate, it automatically engages the parking brake shoes instead, so you will still come to a stop eventually, just not as quickly. If the ABS module works but is unable to apply brakes - e.g. because of hydraulic failure - the EPB will actually "use" the ABS module and sensors to apply the parking brake with anti-lock on the rear wheels, and still turn on the rear brake lights in the process!

Pretty amazing. ============
