They did this on my LR expierience day - very impressive, we were doing about 70 with the demo guy driving and he told me to pull the handbrake as if he had frozen/heart attack or whatever. It all stopped pretty quickly. I don't think he had to do much correction to the steering etc. but in a real situation I think I'd have been able to do it anyway.

ive done it at 60mph to test it, just applies the normal brakes (sharply!) but brings it to a stop all under control, its a bit wierd, but works very well. Bodsys Brake Bible

I've done it. It's impressive in the way it works. Basically it just chucks the anchors out and uses the ABS to control it all - it's an emergency stop just as if you had buried the brake pedal. And it does it even if you have your foot on the throttle pedal.

Not sure of the logic of the emergency brake in an emergency - even though you actually pull the handbrake lever it activates the main brakes - now the only real reason you would want to use the emergency brake in an emergency is if the main brakes have failed so how does the emergency brake work in these circumstances???

That's a pretty long time to wait in an emergency !
I guess it takes all the guesswork out of the equation, pull lever and hold on, it will brake the car in the most efficient way possible (caveat above 3 seconds delay). Sure, planting your foot on the brake pedal is technically easy, but when ABS kicks in, how many people wonder what is going on and potentially lift from the brake pedal ? I also saw it first in a Passat we hired years ago, so not just a LR thing. "Roads ? Where we're going there are no roads." Back to the future. |

accelerated stop. I've never used it in anger but can perfectly imagine reflex pull on the handbrake from speed, say, on the motorway

But if the main brakes have failed how is the emergency brake going to work. 07MY RRS TDV6 Arctic Frost Aspen Interior |

I'm not sure it's designed as a "when the main brakes fail" type thing. But (I'm sure Bobby can explain better) the mechanism can likely also use the traditional handbrake. ============
