Suspension light on!!!

Guys...Need a little help!! 06 s/c

The suspension light on dashboard comes on 30 seconds after I start the car and therefore access height becomes unavailable.
If I switch off and start the engine again I can lower the car to access height before the light comes on again.

Loose connection?...I don't know. If I have activated the suspension and then drive off the light comes on after a couple of mins.

Any ideas anyone?

I am in South london...any recommendations for a reputable garage.

Appreciate any help.

Cheers S/C 06 Black

Slick, I agree with Big Ken, new compressor sorted same for me ... this link below might be of some help to you. You will see that depending on your VIN there might also be a software update due on your car that was never carried out before.

Good luck in getting it sorted. Carl

Thanks guys!
Jeez..a new compresser. I thought a lose sensor connection was all that it might have been.

Any recommendations for a nearby garage I can use? BTW what should i expect in terms of the costs?

Thanks again for the quick replies... Thumbs Up S/C 06 Black

If you want main dealer and are West (ish) London, use Lookers Park Royal. James and his team come very highly regarded on here. Bow down
If you are wanting an 'independant', then I'm sure someone will be along to recommend one Thumbs Up ON THE WAY: BMW F21 M140i

Thanks bean counter.

I just did some searching on the net and it seems that this problem is not that rare.

Also, replacing the whole compressor unit may not be necessary. There is a drier unit on the end of the compressor that ( you've guessed it!!!) dries the air that is sucked into and used by the compressor. The silcia in this drier can dry up and turn into dust and clog the filter. So replacing this drier unit + relay + valve should do the trick and of course it would be the cheaper.

Think I will pop along to Lookers Park Royal and see what James can do for me.

Hey Pufftmw,

I decided to buy the spares from land rover ( air drier/delivery valve & relay : cost approx £100 and have them fitted by a trustworthy mechanic. Having them fitted this week. Will let you know the outcome.

I know my compressor works as I am able to raise and lower the car before the suspension light comes on.

Are you able to do that at all...if not you may need to change the compressor as well.

BTW, Landrover have quoted me labour of 1.5 hours...that's a little over £200.00 + vat.

Unfortunately, that's not even my main concern...amazing i know. I am more worried about what damage they may cause accidentally/on purpose to push up the eventual invoice. Like tampering with the compressor and then advising me that I need to change that also...OMG..that would never happen would it?

cheers

Thanks Slick17

My "symptoms" are identical to yours. I was worried I wouldn't be able to lower it to get in the garage but as you said, it lowers and then the fault light comes up.

I'm also in London, so let me know final cost/result as I might use your trustworthy mechanic if all goes to plan

Is he used to RRSs?

Hey Pufftmw,

Sorry for the delay in responding. I only got it fixed yesterday.

Well changed the drier and the relay and it works perfectly. Warning light no longer comes on. The delivery valve did not fit the compressor and so I will be returning it to Land Rover today. I double checked with the parts dept @ land Rover that the valve they sold me was the correct part as it did not look right to me. They confirmed that it was saying it had been modified recently. Wrong!!!

The cap that has to be removed for the replacement of the delivery valve is made of aluminium and was a b**tard to get off and even more difficult to put back...so even more annoying that it wasn't even necessary as the replacement valve did not fit.

Labour cost £115.20 2 hours. better than the £240 Land rover would have charged. Would have been less except the mechanic struggled with the removal of the cap to replace the valve.

We opened the old drier and the mesh on either end was totally clogged with the drier beads which blocked the air getting to the compressor thereby causing the fault.

replacement parts from land Rover: Dryer £68.91
Relay: £7.00 + Vat

BTW: Location of the compressor is rear passenger side in front of the rear wheel!

Hope this helps.

cheers. S/C 06 Black

I've just replaced the whole compressor/drier assembly on mine, symptoms were bouncing back to off road height when lowering to access height, message on display stating suspension slow to rise one morning and a couple of instances of "suspension fault max speed 30mph".

The compressor may be good enough to rise the vehicle, issues with lowering from what I've seen is that the exhaust valve on the compressor gets clogged up, doesn't release air fast enough so the computer thinks it's hit something.

Issues with raising could be the drier being clogged up as slick17 (and others before) mentions.

Couldn't find a replacement valve on microcat for my MY2005, so got a complete new compressor (that's eco-friendly (not) design for you) !

The amount of dust that came out of the plastic box surrounding the compressor was impressive ! Couldn't get two of the pipes off the old compressor either, so cut them and fitted inline push-fit connectors + new pipe from push-fit to compressor.

"Roads ? Where we're going there are no roads." Back to the future.

glad you got your problems fixed guys. One of the main reasons I don't hold my RRS's without warranty is because of the ticking timebomb that is the air suspension. The compressor, the bags, the plumbing..

time to open a shop specialising in these repairs - not just RRS.. air suspension now common on many premium motors.. Mercs, Audis etc.. Shocked ============

2007 TDV8 HSE - superb car and very reliable

2012 - dearly departed, sadly missed.. to return in late 2013 with a new TDV8!
