Blanking EGR valves on 08 sport

Is it possible to blank the valves instead of replacing them??. Been told no on anything after 07 but hoping someone can give me some good news...

Mine is a 2007 and I have had the engine management light on with an EGR valve needed replacing.

I was looking at blanking the valve off too.

After some research because of EURO4 (or something) you need to have an EGR valve in place. You could blank it off and it would still work but you will have your engine management light up on the dash permanently.

Also, as of April any lights on dashboard illuminated that aren't meant to be will fail an MOT. If you take the bulb out they will notice too and it will still fail (not saying you would do this!!)

Any EuIV engine (i.e. your car) will have the EML come on if you blank them. As of this year (not sure exactly when, may be end of this year) if an MOT station sees the EML on, it will fail.

They won't be checking to see if it is blanked as thats not in their remit, but EuIV engines with EML means it's not meeting EuIV stadards, therefore will fail.....

So YES, he can physically blank them, no problem, but resulting in the above. Bodsys Brake Bible

Have actually managed to blank them of from a EU4 car, well not blank of, but let in metered air (from the engine breather) instead of dirty exhaust... Works like a treat, and of course no engine codes. I might try it on our tdv6 when I have some time. RRS SDV6 HEV Dynamic

Bodsy - I was hoping that someone on the techie side was looking at this as an issue for us with newer cars that will come to the problem of sticking valves eventually. Wishful thinking maybe but it would be good if there was an electonic fix, solder in a resistor, etc to allow the light to function on test but go out on start...

Update on mine, my egr valves were faulty so replaced the other week but blanked on one end, car working fine and no light so must be able to be done

The ECU is checking if the EGR actually opens via the MAP sensor in the intake. This check is, as far as I know it, done when you decelerate, then the ECU will open up the valves and then close, and during this time it will monitor the vacuum in the intake. When it doesn’t see the expected values, it will throw a P0401, and the check engine light.
So if you have blocked both pipes, you should expect this code to come sooner or later, if not your car would be of interest to inspect as somehow the ECU is then not checking the operation of the valves.... RRS SDV6 HEV Dynamic

My eml light was coming on all the time before they were changed. He also bought a blanking kit as his buddy at land rover said it can be one on 08 car. The car is running fine now

Very interesting!

I am not sure what the precise conditions are before the ECU does the MAP test, and my experience with the EU4 car that I was able to block was that it could take a while before the fault would show up, and it would only show up after a 2nd drive cycle.

How much drive cycles have you done now and how much miles have you drive? RRS SDV6 HEV Dynamic

I've done a few hundred miles in it now and is used every day. I spoke to my buddy before explaining what people had said on here and he said he checked my chassis number with a 4x4 expert and once new ones were fitted and blanked at one end I would never have a problem with the valves or the light again.

Very interesting, am curious then how long it will be ok.

I actually had already closed one side a couple of days ago to see if that could have an effect, but after your post changed also the other side. So far, only short driving distances and there are no codes (also no pending ones, which I check with an obdII reader).

If no codes come up, there must be a different ecu program which doesn’t do certain checks obviously.

What vin do you have? Mine is a 8A123xxx, and as far as I know has the latest ECU software (a later version then from the factory). RRS SDV6 HEV Dynamic
