I was recently told that insurers are considering rejecting claims for accidents in the snow if the Police have issued a warning not to drive unless its an emergency.

Could be an urban myth but has anyone else heard this ? - might be worth a question to the AA or ABI.

No you could be rite. I did hear something like that last year. But we had sod all snow down here last year. If the police said only in emergency to drive then the insurance will not pay out in an accident. Be good to know for sure. Can't see it coming to that personally. How can the police get the message to all drivers? What happens if you're halfway through a journey when they announce it's too dangerous? There will be too many grey areas for insurers to overcome. 2015 Golf R DSG

43 Police Forces in the UK at the moment, they all work differently.

Would be hard to prove who said what and why.

Urban myth so far in my view....

The bigger issue is if you fit winter/snow tyres and fail to tell your insurer.

Bizarrely enough that's much more likely to render you uninsured as you have "modified" the car.

I think its more if the police spotted you going past or moving a roadblock sign,then you crashed off the road due to deep snow/ice .

This would then indeed be your own fault, Id not be happy about my insurance company spending my premiums fixing the car belonging to morons.

If only! Two years ago, HR Director decided to play Submarine Commander in his X5 by following a tractor through a flood. Insurance coughed to a five-figure bill.

The entire country would come to a standstil and we would go bust in a day if they tried to enforce this pathetic idea

I believe the original warning is "if you drive past a Road Closed sign" not a blanket "please do not drive unless necessary"
