Buying privately - independent inspection ?

Hi all,

I was hoping to get some opinions on here from the RRS experienced.

If you were buying a used RRS privately that had the balance of the LR Approved Used Warranty (not Select) remaining, would you still have it independently inspected prior to purchase or save the money and rely on your own basic evaluation, using the warranty as the backup ? Proud owner of a 2008 TDV8 HSE.....and an Audi A3 2.0T DSG Cab and a Porsche 911 Turbo (Mercedes W208 320 CLK and Mercedes W124 E220 Estate now gone)

I wouldn't say that my reply could be said to be specific to Land Rover, but I've always thought that when it comes to vehicle inspection the buyer holds all the cards.

After all, you are the one parting with the cash and they are the ones that want it, so make them work for it.

If you are dealing with a private individual when buying a car simply ask them to have an Independent inspection carried out. That way they can show the inspection report to anyone who is looking to buy.

Think similar to the HIP's scheme that was used for selling property.

Alternatively, if you have a high degree in confidence in the vehicle once you've looked at it, say that you are prepared to negotiate, but want an inspection carried out and the cost of that will factor into your final offer price.

Quite a few "traders" will foot the cost themselves and offer full disclosure on the report (as long as it's positive).

I know that if I was asked to pay for an inspection on a vehicle over a certain value I'd get one done. It shows that you have nothing to hide and are confident in the quality of the vehicle you are selling.

Contrary to popular belief buyers don't grow on trees and finding the right one who is prepared to pay the price you are looking for against simply for putting your hand in your pocket to pay for an inspection is far better value than re-advertising or waiting as your investment depreciates.

If your private seller isn't prepared to pay for the inspection then maybe they do have something to hide.

If it's for your own peace of mind and the seller won't pay for an inspection. Then I'm sure you know, this could be the best money you've ever spent.
Although In my book, if you've any doubt then there is no doubt and walk away.

If you have a look on eBay you'll see more and more dealers and traders are getting people in like the RAC and posting the actual video footage of the inspection as it's carried out in their adverts.

Thanks for the feedback.

My main question was really to see if people felt that the LR Approved Used Warranty was sufficient protection to negate an independent inspection. Proud owner of a 2008 TDV8 HSE.....and an Audi A3 2.0T DSG Cab and a Porsche 911 Turbo (Mercedes W208 320 CLK and Mercedes W124 E220 Estate now gone)

Rich makes a valid point, and I think his HIP analogy is quite good.

What I would say, and my opinion may be biased as I am looking to sell my vehicle with the balance of LR used warranty remaining (it's not mine is it?!?!? Wink ) is that it's a bit like buying a house that still has part of it's NHBC remaining. For some people that's piece of mind enough, but for others they want to make fully sure and take the cautious approach.

Both houses and RRS' are a lot of money and you don't want to make a mistake.

I must admit that I hadn't thought of getting the RAC/AA check myself for selling my vehicle. I think what I would do is be happy to get one done, but after the car had been viewed and a refundable deposit paid.
