Hi all

I want to have a go at colour coding the tailgate moulding on my RRS to match the body colour (just to see if i can make a good job as i have 3 spare ones) can anyone give me any guidelines to achieving the best results from spray can techniques?. Will i need to add a clear coat lacquer after applying the Java paint?. LR parts suggest not but im of the opinion that i will need to.

If it turns out great then i will fit it to my car if not i will have it painted by a bodyshop, no harm done.

I don't think you will get a good finish using spray can's, you need a proper air gun with the right mix right temperature aspecially this time of year, and a good primer, you will need to give it a few coats of primer to build up and get rid of the plastic texture of the trim, spray can's are not the best for spraying paint, they should of stopped at hair laquar's

you are wasting your time with cans, its only cellulose paint, while the rest of the vehicle is in 2 pack paint,
The plastic has to be properly prepared with a specific plastic etch primer, else it will peel.
for best results you use a metallic base, colour and lacquer,baked then compound.
Best to leave it to a body shop rather than wasting more money on unsatisfactory results, shouldn't cost to much

I actually have 3 of these so am deciding if i should paint all 3 and sell 2 or just paint 1 for me and leave the others.

I've got a couple of quotes so will have any work done professionally.

Hi, did you get them all painted, and if so, how did they turn out and did you sell them? (interested if not )

Got 1 left, the other 2 have sold on eBay. I didnt bother getting them painted, i sold my S/C for a 911 C4S

Just have a go! What have you got to lose if you have spares. Key the surface prior to spraying use a decent plastic primer, spray the top coat on and leave to dry, make sure you apply the coats carefully, little at a time is always best but get a good few coats on then if it looks a bit orange peely when dry just get some soapy water and some very fine wet and dry ant rub them down, when you rubbed them down polish with rubbing compound then finally with polish. Ive got many good results with spray cans.

Just a note I resprayed an entire rear of a defender with aresol cans of genuine colour...it can be done and you can get perfect results.

It takes time, care and good light, heat and primer.
