Warning on buying used RRS

Hi All

A few weeks ago I picked up my first ever RRS after years of wanting a Range Rover in some form, a TDV6 HSE MY06.

I love the car and thought I'd look at a remap via Bell Autos BAS, little did I know it had already been done years ago by superchips!!!

Without my knowledge I had been driving around a modified RRS and therefore was not insured, confirmed by 1 quick phone call to my insurance company who wanted to cancel the policy immediately.

It is now being collected by the dealer, LandRover Approved, to have all modules upgraded and my insurance settled with a letter confirming its factory standard as I can not drive it until done.

To say I'm not happy I was put in this situation is an understatement.

I'd advise anyone buying one to insist they reflash the ECU and highly recommend Pete at Bell Auto's who has been fantastic.

If you was looking at a remap with BAS your insurance would be still invalid

Instead your getting it put back to standard and going without the remap you was going to get anyway Confused

Would it not been better to have kept your 'free' superchip remap and played dumb Question

You got the remap for free and your complaining Question

It is very hard to determine if a car has had a remap, so it wouldn't be picked up by the approved used program or when you have it serviced. That's one of the big benefits of a remap, it virtually undetectable so there is no way your insurance company (or warranty provider) would have known until you told them. WINNER - 2009 ‘Just Doing What It’s Designed To Do’ Award

I was going to notify them and if needed change insurance and probably still will once its all sorted.
However the ECU software was very old and there are many updates it should have for the ECU, Transmission etc...... before being re-maped.

Playing dumb is ok if you dont mind being out of pocket having no legal cover losing no claims etc until you've proven yourself not at fault which could take months. Insurance is there to make money and not pay out if they can help it,this would be Christmas to them.

It did cross my mind however Laughing just too honest and sensible as I get older I guess.

It will be interesting to see how you stand in the future with any used warranty claims for the engine or transmission............... I think it might have been better to have completely rejected the car, inisted on a replacement of equivalent or higher value and then tell LR their approved used warranty sucks if they don't check the car has been remapped. The engine isn't designed to be remapped and it says so in the warranty so LR could easily turn round and refuse to repair major components if they fail. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

I agree with Tim, i think a word with your local trading standards would be in order.

Tim thats a point I hadn't even thought of and will bring up with them tomorrow!

I might even get it in writing that they will cover everything for the year and will not hold me in anyway resposible for the previous owners remap.

In the dealers favour they have been very appologetic, are resolving ASAP, and are going to make it part of their standard PDI going forward.

It was also an old fasion remap, e.g. opening up the ECU not via the Diag Port, so I think it would have been more evident if worse case had occured.

I just want the car back, despite this set back, its still the best thing I've ever owned and it always puts a smile on my face.

The ECU's are sealed by the manufacturer so why didn't they pick up that it had been tampered with? They are being co-operative with you because they are scared stiff that you will reject the car or report them to LR/Trading Standards. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Evening all.

This post has got me thinking. I always thought Mrs JFK`s Sport was a bit lively for a 2.7 & am now concerned the previous owner may have remapped it.

What do you guys think my chances of getting an honest answer from the dealer if it is mapped?

My biggest worry is the insurance aspect. Thieving Censored s never want to pay when they have to. Some say it is difficult to tell if the car has been mapped. Not sure id risk that.

The dealers have the ability to read the ECU's despite what people say about remaps being undetectable, they can also completely wipe them and then re-write them. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Thanks Tim.

I guessed as much & have booked car in for checking on Monday, they also say if it was `mapped` they wont void my warranty as I was unaware,as were they.

Very surprised that they dont do this as a matter of course when preparing car for resale.

Biggest concern is the insurance angle so to be safe RRS can stay in my garage until collected Monday.

Mrs JFK is consigned to the Volvo.

My sister used to work for an insurance broker, her advice was simple, when ever asked the questions on the recorded call, "has the vehicle been modified in any way from its factory condition" you should respond "not that I am aware of". If anything had occured or been modified discreetly since purchase then you are then covered. This especially important if you have 20inch wheels. If the car is written off, your insurers may look at original dealer details and find it did not come with these as standard. However, if you "are not aware" then they cant prove you changed them post purchase

Pete

Well its all back to latest factory spec, all modules, and to me it seems smoother and no slower so I'm happy with car.

Still not happy with the "experience" and a letter will be written seeking clarification on my Warranty and assurances it wont happen again.

Good to hear you have a happy ending and are pleased with the standard set-up - 95% of owners are pleased with the factory tune, if they weren't LR wouldn't sell so many RRS! 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Recently fitted a plug and play "Chip Express" module and am absolutely delighted with the performance and economy improvements it brings... Rather than chance any problems I also informed my brokers who in turn took a website link of my particular chip and forwarded it to my insurance company (Allianz)...They in turn have noted the modification and are happy enough to continue my insurance cover with it in place and at no extra charge....The only"risk" I run is LR rejecting a warranty claim...however its a 2 minute job to remove the module if the car needs to return to the Dealer for any reason leaving no trace.
