United Kingdom 2008 Range Rover Sport TDV6 HSE Java Black
TDV8 to 2010 TDV6

I'm currently looking at changing from my 07 TDV6HSE to either a late TDV8 or perhaps an ex demo/low mileage 2010 TDV6....has anyone here changed from an older model TDV8 to a 2010 TDV6 and, if so, I'm v interested to hear your thoughts?

Always assumed that I was going to change to a TDV8 but the new model with the revised interior is a compelling argument and, I suspect, a better longer term bet residual wise....although the lure of the TDV8 is still stong (but not feasible in a newer model for me as too expensive)!

Any thoughts/experiences appreciated!

Thumbs Up JT

I tested and ordered a MY10 TDV6 but because of a mix up at the dealer followed by a cancelled order and a new offer on an immediately available car, I'm now driving a MY10 TDV8. I'll probably be in a minority amongst the TDV8 owners on here, but having driven both, I think that the 3.0 TDV6 is still a great engine and I would be very happy to drive it. Power, refinement and fuel economy are superb on the new V6. I am surprised by how much fuel the V8 uses - 13l/100km so far for me so far, mainly on the motorway and without excessive use of the throttle.

So, if you asked me to choose between a previous MY TDV8 and a MY10 TDV6, I would choose the MY10 TDV6. Every silver lining has a cloud

That seems very high for mainly motorway use. I am averaging around 10.7L/100km for city driving and around 9.5L/100km when doing mainly motorway driving. Furthermore, I'll admit that I am a bit of lead-foot when it comes to driving so I reckon I could probably do better than that (slightly) if I tried hard.

You're probably right. I've only had it a few days and a couple of hundred kilometers so I'll see how it does in the next few months. Wink

Very nice car. The Ivory/Piano interior is Cool It's a no kids zone, though. Every silver lining has a cloud

England 2012 Range Rover Sport SDV6 Autobiography Fuji White

Hi, I am a tdv8 driver and had a MY10 V6 car from the dealer as a replacement car. There was no 'soul' in it. That' the only way I can describe it.

I am sure it is a great engine but if you love cars and driving then your car has to have 'soul' = the v6 didn't.

have to agree with you about cars having a soul, i stuck with subarus for so long because they have a "soul" despite mitsi's evos being quicker , imho they couldnt match the chitty chitty bang bang of an impreza "talking" to you!!

saying that , i recon once you get going on a smooth flowing country road, i can cover ground every bit as quick in my 3ltr V6 than in my imprezas! and with it being so quiet and refined inside i am not sure i would want to upset that by having the v8 bellowing through the airvents!!

cheers

The V8 is lovely and so is the 3.0 V6 ...

... but for soul, I think that my MY07 D3 riding on KL71s is still my preferred drive.

United Kingdom 2005 Range Rover Sport TDV6 HSE Rimini Red

On paper the TDv8 and TDv6 3.0l are so close as to make no difference. In use however the TDv8 has more grunt, more surge, more creamy power and more feel (which might be summarised as "soul"). But I would imagine that no one driving the TDv6 will feel short changed (like you did in the 2.7) and you would quickly forget the extra pleasure that a TDv8 could provide.

But for real soul - my 200tdi Defender 90 CSW beats them all Razz RRS TDv8 HSE Rimini

United Kingdom 2008 Range Rover Sport TDV6 HSE Java Black

Thanks for the comments guys, all appreciated and kind of what I suspected...!

Despite having come from a line of far sportier RWD cars that all had real character and 'soul' (S50 & S54 model ZM Coupes, Alpina D3 etc in the past few years), I've really enjoyed the RRS and even enjoyed driving in a calmer and more relaxing manner (well most of the time!), but the 2.7l engine is the weakest link IMO and I agree that the TDV8 adds plenty of character to the car....

My 'problem' at the moment is that it currently only makes sense for my wife and I to have one car so I'm probably trying to tick too many 'boxes' with one vehicle......the point at which my FFR Vogue SE sits in the garage alongside my Zonda F, RS6 Avant and my GT3 RS will remove this issue somewhat.... Mr. Green

I think I need to go on the back to back test drive that James/Matthew suggested I do and finally make up my bloody mind.... Laughing

Thanks all!

JT

I heard, whether it is true, is that the current TDV8 in the RRS is to be dropped entirely from the range. The FFRR will get the 4+ltr TDV8 and the TDV6 will appear in 2 guises for the Sport. Either a reduced output as the current 3.0TDV6 is and a higher output 3.0TDV6. The Jags are running 275PS, maybe the LR's will too? Plus a new 8 speed gearbox....... 2010MY Land Rover Freelander 2 HSE

Today I had a brief chance to give the new TDV8 a poke on some of the nice twisty-turny billiard table roads over here. Oooh. Mr. Green I'm beginning to see what the TDV8 rush is all about. Every silver lining has a cloud

NJF - looking at the spec of your D3, that's one hell of a school run you've got there...... Mr. Green

What does everyone think of HSTs (in stornoway) ?? I keep changing my mind from thinking they look great to far too bling and blatantly 'townie'...(no offence to HST owners!).....?

In reality I'll never use the vehicle for much more than greenlaning, towing the odd horsebox/large trailer etc, but are you hindered to any great degree in an HST over a standard HSE..?

Gazzer,

Any idea when this may happen if it were to....? Agreed it would make some sense given the Jag options.....

I'm trying to work out whether this would have a positive or adverse effect on TDV8 residuals...... Question

Nothing official. JLR don't talk about the future in public, only the present!

FFRR I heard was going to be given one final botox and facelift combo before the arrival of the all new RR in 2011/122. This would have the new 4+ltr Ford sourced TDV8. I'd be surprised if they did this however, as there would be too much work/money to revise the current MKIII. But it would help flagging sales of the model.

All gossip and speculation, you won't know for sure until it happens. The current TDV8 RRS will IMHO be past it's best, the twin turbo 3.0TDV6 is almost as good & with more power it will be fab.
