got stuck in snow.. question on technique/cause

it may just be the tyres (20" Toyo's)....

but had a whale of a time on Salisbury Plain in the mud, no signs of getting stuck.. drove through the snow for a good few hours before finally getting firm stuck:

had her in low range, terrain response set to mud/snow, DSC turned off, gear 2 using command shift... but couldn't get ANY traction

is there anything I could have/should have done differently? would different tyres have *really* helped here?

cheers

I've too had been disappointed with the traction in the snow with the standard 20" tyres. Got me wondering would the locking differential option make a big difference? It seemed just one wheel on each axle was spinning when I got stuck.

Did you get the car out eventually mate? WINNER - 2009 ‘Just Doing What It’s Designed To Do’ Award

The problem is your tyres - the treads just clog too quickly in those conditions and end up as slicks, no amount of electronics can get you out of that! 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

As Tim says....... Tyres!

The tread gets clogged then you polish the snow under the tyre.

They did perform well on a muddy Sailsbury Plain, I can vouch for that as I was there! (in a Defender).

United Kingdom 2007 Range Rover Sport TDV6 S Java Black

Popped down to my local garage today with my unused 18ins alloys complete with the all weather tyres in the boot to swap them for the 20ins alloys that were on her. Bit of a palava but sure it will be well worth it. Just waiting for some snow now !!!!

Will swap them back again when the sun comes out !!

I've currently got a set of 19" on eBay. Perhaps I should consider pulling the auction and keeping for the winter months.

I believe that only mud tyres can handle that kind of situation 2009 Range Rover Sport 2.7 TDV6 SE, Alaska White, Almond leather, tinted windows, active rear diff, tow pack, HiICE, full spare: gone and already missed

Mud tyres are good for snow but not so good on ice, proper snow ice tyres are siped (small cuts in the tread) allowing the tread blocks to move more and helps the tyres stick to the ice. for more extreme ice/snow you can get tyres with studs (usually tungsten) that bite into the ice to provide grip, I've seen them used in Norway. Sons of dogs come hither and get flesh

As a temporary easy On/off solution, wouldn't a set of snow chains have helped in RRSBOY's situation?

I would welcome comments on this idea as I'm thinking of buying a set for the new RRS when it arrives
in a few days as it has the 20" wheels whereas my current one has 19's. 2013 Discovery HSE Luxury - 3.0 SDV6 - Santorini Black

LR don't advise snow chains with 20" wheels. I am told it's to do with clearance at the rear between the chains and airbags for the suspension.

You can put snow chains on the front wheels as per the RRS accessory catalogue, they are available for 18, 19 and 20 inch wheels
