I've too had been disappointed with the traction in the snow with the standard 20" tyres. Got me wondering would the locking differential option make a big difference? It seemed just one wheel on each axle was spinning when I got stuck.

The problem is your tyres - the treads just clog too quickly in those conditions and end up as slicks, no amount of electronics can get you out of that! 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Popped down to my local garage today with my unused 18ins alloys complete with the all weather tyres in the boot to swap them for the 20ins alloys that were on her. Bit of a palava but sure it will be well worth it. Just waiting for some snow now !!!!

I've currently got a set of 19" on eBay. Perhaps I should consider pulling the auction and keeping for the winter months.

Mud tyres are good for snow but not so good on ice, proper snow ice tyres are siped (small cuts in the tread) allowing the tread blocks to move more and helps the tyres stick to the ice. for more extreme ice/snow you can get tyres with studs (usually tungsten) that bite into the ice to provide grip, I've seen them used in Norway. As a temporary easy On/off solution, wouldn't a set of snow chains have helped in RRSBOY's situation?

LR don't advise snow chains with 20" wheels. I am told it's to do with clearance at the rear between the chains and airbags for the suspension.
