Rear Interior Lights (map lights?)

Guys,

Is there a way to get lighting in the rear cabin when the doors are open ?

The back of my RR is pitch black (apart from the light above the mirror in the front) when I open the doors, is there a way to get those map lights to come on when the doors are open ?

Thanks !

yup its possible, there is a tutorial on here somewhere but it is quite involved. you have to run wires solder on to switches etc.

I did this mod last year using the instructions downloaded from this site. I've placed a copy of the instructions in my gallery

Good luck
Carl

Carl,

Thanks for that. Did you use the same approach (cutting into the sheath of the violet wire also also clipping the new wire under the clamp of the courtesy light bulb holder) ?

How long did it take you per side ?

Andy

Hi Andy,
It's a little while ago that I did this so it's not fresh in my mind. I recall that fishing the wire through from the centre column to the rear side light was probably the most fiddly part of the process, I made the connection to the purple wire only on one side of the car, I fished a wire across the roof to connect the two lights together rather than going to the trouble of making connections at the bottom of both 'B' pillars. I soft soldered the connections to both the purple wire and also to the bulb holder part of the light fitting (rather than relying on the wire between the bulb and the holder) - I also added two diodes - one at each light - the result is that all 3 lights come on when you open the doors, all 3 come on when you turn the front courtesy light on, but each of the rear lights comes on by itself when you use the switches on the rear lights. I think I spent most of a day on it - probably about 6-8hrs but I'm sure it could be done quicker.

Regards
Carl

This was a must do for MY10. Guess what they didn't do it!

Carl,

Thanks for the info, where exactly did the diodes link in ? (I'm guessing between the new wire and the connection to the bulb holder) ?

Hi Andy,
Yes between the new wire and the bulb holder - I've just taken a couple of photos of mine and added the to my gallery - you can just see the diode

One last question (hopefully)... does anyone know which fuse is used to control the puddle lamps and the lamps on the bottom of the doors ? The owners manual isn't really much help with the descriptions.

I pulled F1 but that seems to control the rear interior lamps and the center overhead console switched lights only.

Thanks

Modification completed this morning !

Thanks to all who read/commented and provided advice, thanks also to the original poster who documented the process !!

Makes a hell of a difference when you have black-out windows all round, I can see what I'm doing now !

Hi, did you do the same also on the right side? I mean, the green/white cable is in the same position (facing right) as on the left side of the car. Just to know if I've to take it on the left as on the guide on the CarlW Gallery. Hope you can understand my bad English and what I mean! Thanks

Hi,

Yeah, I did exactly the same on both sides, green/white wire swapped in the connector at the courtesy light and spliced into the purple wire at the bottom of the pillar.

I must have dislodged something at the RF sensor, people tell me it's in the pillar or the roof but I'm at a loss to the exact location....

Is there an antenna for the RF receiver in the window glass, perhaps I dislodged that ???

Help !

Andy

Rear Interior Lights

I can not believe that the rear cabin lights do not have a courtesy setting for entry/exit door opening. Is the modification difficult, being a pen pusher who struggles to fit a light bulb at home, is there anyone out there who would do it, do landrover modify? purple people eater

PPE - there are courtesy lights in the rear doors.............................................. just that in Land Rover's mind it is nicer to have them in the bottom of the rear doors to illuminate the big cow pat you are about to step into rather than the seat you want to sit in! 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it
