3 in the last month (in the oil business at least).
- This one, like the Canadian crash, looks bad.

A Eurocopter this time.

The police were at our company offices in Aberdeen this afternoon. Our firm is heavily involved with work on board the Miller platform at present, so i can only assume that some of our people are gone Sad

My younger brother used to fly on the super pumas out to his rig in the Beryl field, it was always worrying when you heard of anything about a helicopter in trouble out on the North Sea. My sympathy to all that are involved.
My brother spent more than 20 years out on the rigs as a radio officer and then a telecoms technician, he was involved with one incident when a yacht got into trouble and he co-ordinated the rescue of the people on the the yacht. Sadly he is no longer with us having succumbed to cancer in 2006, one of the things that amazes me is that in december he passed his offshore survival course at RGIT when his cancer was quite advanced, he was still working offshore in january and he passed away at the begining of march. Sons of dogs come hither and get flesh

Just arrived offshore on Hibernia after a 22 hour boat ride. We were on the boat when we heard about this latest Super Puma going down. Tragic. Looks like no-one survived. I knew one of the guys - Davy Rae, a toolpusher for KCA Drilling.

Our helicopter fleet is still grounded out here, but we may very well be flying again within 2 weeks. In the meantime, it's boat transfers.

There are more than 250 icebergs heading our way too - and sea pack ice all around - including St. John's harbour.

Three helicopters down in 2 months is really bad. Lets hope it's the end of it!!!

Alicatt, I worked on Beryl for 11 years, both Alpha and Bravo, so I probably knew your brother. I was there from 1990 to 2001. Sorry to hear the news of his passing.

Derek was working out there then too, at that time he worked for Marconi as a radio officer, later he got a job with Mobil as a telecoms tech on the Bravo but he did work on both rigs. Before that he was with Odeco on the Ocean Nomad.

This is deeply worrying. Surely sabotage is not a word anyone would like to associate with these unfortunate accidents and incidents... Runner up - 2009 Best Avatar Award Sad

Australia 2010 Range Rover Sport Supercharged Java Black

Guys

Firstly, let me declare my hand. I work for Sikorsky. The EC225 and Super Puma family are NOT my product, they are my direct competitors. However much their sales take food off my table, I find myself in a position to defend my competitor's product.

In my flying days, I used to fly the Super Puma. In fact, as a young sprog co-pilot, I was in the first batch of pilots trained to fly it. I have hours numbering in the thousands in Super Pumas over the North Sea as a pilot.

The Super Puma family has flown millions of hours over the last 27 years or so and ahs maintained a good safety record. The design has been updated over the years from the designation AS332L to L1, L2 and now EC225 (fancy name for L3 under the Eurocopter rather than Aerospatiale banner)

The sad accident on the North Sea is extremely rare. The cause is unknown at this time but it "looks" like a mechanical failure of some description....looks, not definite yet. Mechanical failure is really too generic a term since there can be many contributing factors which can compound the situation (crew or maintenance factors)

All of the aircraft flying worldwide (with only one or two minor exceptions) in oil and gas operations are equipped with 2 "black" boxes, a cockpit voice recorder and a flight data recorder. Both of these are invaluable when trying to determine the cause of an accident.

Additionally, all of these aircraft are fitted with a Health and Usage Monitoring System known as HUMS. This system records vibrations, temperatures of critical components etc. It is highly sophisticated. The information is downloaded after each flight and displayed graphically to the HUMS Engineer. Any slight abnormalities are immediately highlighted, even if the are technically within limits.

The data is also sent to the manufacturers who are able to look at it in relation to the worldwide fleet which they do.

To have two such accidents within a month to two sophisticated aircraft (from different manufacturers) flown by experienced pilots and maintained by experienced engineers is without parallel within the last 25 years.

All aircraft have "incidents" which result in delayed flights or unscheduled landings. Many times, passengers would not be aware of anything abnormal. However, at the current time, there is an increase in awareness of anything to do with offshore helicopter flying. Even the most insignificant of abnormalities will attract a headline. A precautionary landing for a "fuel issue" could be something as insignificant as a filter light or a malfunctioning fuel transfer pump or even a fuel gauge problem.

The media love to get hold of a story and blow it up. Their inference is that the Super Puma type has had another "incident" so it must be unsafe. They say the same about my product when its fashionable to do so. Next time it will be an airline, or a type of plane or the oil industry or even a car.

There are risks associated with providing energy to the world be it coal mining or in the oil industry. Those of us who are in or who have been in the industry know the risks. But for the media to suggest that any helicopter is less safe today than it was yesterday or has suddenly become unsafe is patently untrue. Gone - 2008 Stornoway Grey RRS 2.7 TDV6
