Not true: The 4.4 is the naturally aspirated version of the 4.2 Supercharged engine: It was increased in capacity for Land Rover use (it is 4.2 in Jaguar applications). It is a properly modern engine with VVT, alloy block, etc. but was dropped from the UK line-up when the TDV8 was launched in late 2006. It is the main engine in petrol markets (Gulf, USA, RoW) and is by no means out of date or anything and is arguably the most refined engine of the lot - less aggressive than the S/C, no turbo lag compared to a diesel, and very quiet and smooth. Don't dismiss it until you've tried it as they are very cheap in the UK and you may well save more than enough in cost than you will ever spend on fuel in a TDV8!

As far as spec is concerned SE / HSE are the only ones with Sat Nav at the age you are looking at and with your budget I would go HSE for all the toys.

Those prices in Britain I had to pay waaayyyy more for mine.


If you can afford it and have similar mileage to me (i.e. 30,000 a year), take a TDV8, it's by far the best engine for all normal beings (i.e. everybody who can't afford to drive the SC as an every day drive). But if you only drive 10,000 miles or something like that the SC may turn out to be the cheaper car because it should be quite well priced when used.

The TDV6 is a great car, but of course the TDV8 is just that little bit better in everything, it sounds a little bit better (the TDV6 doesn't sound like a BMW or VW diesel, it actually sounds quite well for a diesel), it is faster, it looks better (grill and vents are sc-look) and of course a V8 is just the way to go in a car like this!  RRS TDV6 HSE, 2006, bonatti grey, ebony interior, rear diff, s/c grille and vents, stormers, privacy, tasmods, iphone integration

My biggest regret is getting the TDV8 over the 4.4V8. Diesel can be of variable quality around here and according to LRSA, the 4.4 is the most reliable of the lot in our conditions. It also doesn't have DR or Brembos as std, so you don't get knocking and can use 18"rims for offroading. You also don't need to worry about EGRs, DPFs, collapsed intercooler pipes, blown turbos etc.

Next one will be petrol

G4 back in 2006 used 4.4 engines in all the cars I believe... Think that might say something

Though I've only been driving my 4.4 V8 for a very short while, its good to hear such votes of confidence for the non S/C petrol! I personally haven't noticed any lack mid-range but then my local dealer did a load of software upgrades during a service last week, including to the power train and engine ecu so that may have changed something mid-range - before the service, I only drove it about 20 miles so it's hard to say!

However, the X5 4.4 V8 I had previously did have quite a large lag mid-range and BMW could do nothing to sort it - my RRS 4.4 definitely does not behave as bad as that  Was RRS 4.4 V8 HSE Tonga Green, now Audi Allroad

Do the RRS and FFRR share the exact same motor re: 4.4 V8 ?

Going on the above they do now - when launched FFRR used 2 BMW engines - the TD6, straight 6 3.0litre TD and the V8 was their 4.4litre. From 2007 (IIRC) FFRR got TDv8 and Jaguar 4.4V8. There is no 4.4V8 available in the UK any longer, it's available in USA and other markets where there is no Euro spec low sulphur diesel that is required for the TDv8
