United Kingdom 2009 Range Rover Sport TDV6 HSE Santorini Black
Park brake fault

Picked up my new sport a week ago , tried to release the park brake the next morning and red park light started flashing with the message "park brake fault". Switched the engine off and restarted it and the problem went away. Next day the same thing happened and again the day after that , then it took two or three restarts to clear the fault. Took the car to stealers and they couldn`t find anything amiss. They cleaned all the terminals but fault appeared again the next morning. They are now getting a "wizzard" auto electrician to have a look at it tomorrow. Has anyone else had the same problem and how was it rectified ? I just want my motor back !! Big Cry ste777

when the fault appeared, was the parking brake locked on (i.e. the car was stuck and wouldn't move until it reset?)

Hi Graham , yes the brake was locked on until I restarted the car. Tried pulling off with the fault on, which should release the brake but it wouldn`t release. Have you had the same problem ? ste777

this happened to me once. And boy was it a serious inconvenience. I drove to rural Northern Ireland (from Glasgow), parked in a hotel car park, put the hand brake on and heard a 'farting' noise. I then had the same problem you had. Damn car wouldn't move forward or back so I locked her up, went for lunch and when I came back, the handbrake disengaged (thank goodness as I was miles from anywhere). I did not use the handbrake for a week until I got home and I then went to the Land Rover dealer. They allegedly replaced the hand brake shoes and assembly under warranty and I have had no trouble since. I have since found out that the dealer explanation for this is bullshit - as the handbrake apparently does not have brake shoes. But I might be wrong in this.
It has also put me off using the parking brake and I think I only apply it once a week or when i really need to use it.
Regards

Malaysia 2006 Range Rover Sport Supercharged Chawton White

A weak battery can cause this problem.
And yes, the system does have brake shoes etc. Wink Malaysia Boleh!

Got the car back on the 19th feb , they said that they traced the fault to the steering column adjuster (i`ve got this disabled because I have got hand controls fitted due to me being a paraplegic). They said that when the car computer booted up after being in sleep mode it was detecting that the steering column had a fault because it was disabled and this showed up as a park brake fault (I don`t know why either). They enabled the column adjuster and hid it inside the cowling under the column , this left a big hole in the cowling where the adjuster used to be but I wasn`t bothered because they said that the problem was now gone. ALAS! this was not the truth because two days after I picked it up the fault occured again and has done so each day since. Phoned them up today and they said they had contacted Land Rover when they had my car in for some advice about the problem and they have only just got back to them. They recomend that they replace the "park brake computer". So now I`m waiting for LR to get back to me to let me know when they can get me a replacement vehicle whilst they "repair" mine (we`ll see). I`ll post again with an update when they`ve done it , so bye for now. ste777
