"Water in fuel" error message

Guys, I need your help

since I last picked up fuel, every time I start the engine I get "water in fuel" on the information display. No other error indicators are being turned on though.

Did I really pick up some bad stuff last time? Should I be worried and consult the service station or just drive the tank emtpy and hope with the next fuel load the problem disapears?

Thanks for your recommendations! Chris

Are you also getting the Diesel in coolant message ??

Is it possible you got them back to front at the last fill ?

It means that your fuel filter has got too much water in it and wherever you last filled up has possibly been "diluting" their diesel with water - might even be condensation or a water leak into their storage tanks. Get it into the dealer ASAP otherwise you will damage the engine. You may also need to have your tank completely drained and the fuel lines cleaned - this is nearly as bad as putting petrol into a diesel. My sister had this happen to a Peugeot years ago - the dealer reckoned it had been water that had come out of the diesel over the six years of the car's life and did it for free. A couple of weeks later they contacted her to ask for her fuel bills and where did she buy her diesel because they had had a whole load of cars that had fuelled up at the local supermarket and arranged for a visit from the local trading standards officers. They found found that the supermarket had been delivering diesel/ water mixtures and the delivery truck drivers had been working a scam with them............................... supermarket filling station had to be closed, tanks drained, lines drained and they had to pay huge compensation to everybody who could prove they had suffered damage - some folks had had to have new engines fitted! It has happened a few times in the UK.

There is a note in the Owner's manual about what to do about this. Look in the section about the driver information display - warnings, which will tell you where to look in the rest of the manual. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Thanks Tim, I will contact the service garage immediately. It seems I picked up some bad diesel last time. Russian fuel is known for bad quality but I always go to BP and thought I am relatively safe Shocked You cant trsut anybody nowadays. But at least I know who to sue if the car really got damaged Evil or Very Mad Chris

If I recall correctly, I believe there is also an additive that you can add to your fuel tank when you refill that 'helps' combat any contaminated diesel....

it is now fact. I went to the service place to do the inspection. They had to change the fuel filter which was full with water, clean the tank, pipes and the injection system. The tank did not only contain water but also lots of other dirt they say Big Cry Luckily the car has sensors to measure the degree of filter polution before something really bad happens to the engine.

Dont know what to do now. I could probably sue BP but then in Russia this is quite useless - corruption and arbitrariness everywhere. You cant trust the court and "legal" system. I understand now why they refused to sell Diesel cars into Eastern Europe up a few years ago. Obviously the problem with bad quality did not disappear, they just decided to start selling to improve the sales numbers.

If anyone has a recommendation about addition substances to minimize the polution impact - highly welcome. Chris

My Water in Fuel warning came on today as well as i was backing the car our the drive. I had just filled the car with Diesel.....

It went off as soon as I scrolled through the info menu and was told the error.

I have done several miles this afternoon and it has not come on again.

I think I'll go get the fuel filter changed and get the diesel checked in case my local village garage has a faulty batch of fuel or a water ingress into their storage tank. I also filled the wife's car with diesel yesterday but her's does not have any warning light system for such a think (it's not a RRS).

Hi muffd,

I had the same. At the beginning after I had filled up with the bad stuff the warning only came on after starting the engine and disappeared. After about 1/4 of the diesel used the warning stayed. I recommend that you go to the dealer quickly and let them take clean the tank. Your wife's car might not have the water sensor for the filter and therefore could get damaged without warning you. Chris

The filter can be drained of water without going to the dealer - but I haven't had the need to do it myself (and hope I never have to!). If someone is subscribed to GTR, maybe they can post the relevant pages here......

Hi Tim

I bought it from Parks who have done the servicing so far. A friend of mine who has a garage in Glasgow and who also owns a 4x4 Hire business (Land Rovers biggest 'private' customer in Scotland) near Edinburgh has ordered a fuel filter from Shields and he is having one of his mechanics fit the filter tomorrow. Interestingly, the info warning of water in the fuel only came on very briefly today and then went out. I have used the car 3 times this evening and it has not reoccurred. I have decided to change the filter just in case.

More worryingly: I also had the car re-mapped this morning and I hope this is just a coincidence the water in fuel warning coming on this afternoon. The re-map has made a dramatic difference to the performance of the car. It is like jumping from a 1.6 VW Golf into a GTI. Fabulous difference and the 2.7 famed 'flat-spot' turbo lag has disappeared.

I'll let you know the state of the fuel filter tomorrow. For info, she has done 19,750 miles and was last serviced at 12,000. I use a village independent garage for all fuel so it is highly likely the filter needs replaced.

Regards

Bobby

most helpful. Thank you very much for the technical sheet showing the position of the filter.

I see you are in KL. I visited KL in December with my family for 4 days and then went to Penang. Fabulous.
