Will, were those the RiverRunners LED sets you fitted to your Defender? I have fitted a set to mine and the MOT garage said that they didn't think they were legal....................... the Landy Specialist who fitted them at the same time as fitting a new chassis and full new suspension said they could find nothing that would make having LED's an MOT failure. They are VERY bright and when I look in the rear view mirror and see a reflection of the brake lights on the car behind it looks like my rear fog light is on! 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Can't see them being illegal, unless it's down to a type approval issue?

Yes Tim....they looked the dogs B cks. I did not get any hassle whatsoever and I know what you mean about the brightness.....considering the ridiculous candles on Defenders, I could see more behind me than in front !!! It must be possible to do something on the RRS with minimal expense - L322 Big Daddy SUPERCHARGED 5.0 Autobiography - Here & Now! 5 series for the miles RRS S/C factory built HST - Gone 45 others have been and gone! |

Will, I replaced all the lights except the headlights with them, my side lights are now brighter and whiter than the headlamps which glow with the output that a horse drawn trap has - maybe I forgot to refill the kerosene tanks behind then and it's getting low. I had thought about having a set of "angel eyes" main lights fitted. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Tim, do you get such a great result with just swapping the bulbs or is it a direct replacement that is needed?? I think the FFRR has lots of little LED's for the back lights, but I could be wrong I'm not too worried about the front, more the back, but I guess aesthetically I would do them all if there was a genuine look and use benefit L322 Big Daddy SUPERCHARGED 5.0 Autobiography - Here & Now! 5 series for the miles RRS S/C factory built HST - Gone 45 others have been and gone! |

IIRC unless the law in the UK has changed then all LED lights are technically illegal!

A lot of manufacturers have been putting LED lights in their cars for a while now, especially at the rear and more recently in the front too (Audi is a good example). They can't be illegal surely? Thus my earlier comment re type approval...

Dunno.. I am just quoting what I was told some years ago now... Maybe the law has been updated if it was the case, but it's not unlike the UK to have a law that is decades out of date that needs updating! |

My trailer has LEDS and when connected to the RRS the indicators pulse faintly all the time. It is part of the Range Rover electronic test and diagnosis routine checking the trailer lights, if they had been traditional bulbs with filaments the pulsing would not be visible.

My LED's were complete replacements of everything including the relay in the Defenders fuse box. Same for the headlights that I have looked at - it's a whole replacement unit as the glass is replaced with a clear polycarbonate and the reflector is very fancy instead of the plain reflector that I have now. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it 2018 Melting Silver Mini Countryman PHEV - soon to be replaced 2015MY Corris Grey SDv6 HSE Dynamic, the best car I have ever owned, totally reliable only a cou0le of rattles in 3 years, now no longer in my care Also in my garage is a 1996 TDi300 Defender 90 County HT made into a fake CSW |
