LED's - rear lights

Anybody have any experience of converting the rear light clusters to LED ?? If so, is it a nightmare application or relatively easy with direct bulbs etc Question

I remember when I converted the Defender that relays etc also had to be changed due to the low voltages involved with LED's.

I still love the look of the FFRR and its LED setup - somehow makes our RRS look ordinary (light wise). Smile L322 Big Daddy SUPERCHARGED 5.0 Autobiography - Here & Now!

Will, were those the RiverRunners LED sets you fitted to your Defender? I have fitted a set to mine and the MOT garage said that they didn't think they were legal....................... the Landy Specialist who fitted them at the same time as fitting a new chassis and full new suspension said they could find nothing that would make having LED's an MOT failure. They are VERY bright and when I look in the rear view mirror and see a reflection of the brake lights on the car behind it looks like my rear fog light is on! 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Can't see them being illegal, unless it's down to a type approval issue? Confused

Yes Tim....they looked the dogs B Censored cks. I did not get any hassle whatsoever and I know what you mean about the brightness.....considering the ridiculous candles on Defenders, I could see more behind me than in front !!! Laughing

they have also been done on some of the FL2, front side lights too Thumbs Up

I recall somebody saying that LED switch on quicker than a ordinary bulb so you give the chap behind a extra millisecond to brake and a extra millisecond could be a few feet at motorway speeds.

On the D3 didn't they have problems with the LED's on the rear lights, causing interference on things like the radio and other stuff.

I saw a new Vauxhall Corsa do an emergency stop when the boyracer didn't see the oncoming car he nearly pulled out on and its rear LED brake light pulsed away like some kind of extra warning system for those behind, though i just thought it was faulty Confused

Will, I replaced all the lights except the headlights with them, my side lights are now brighter and whiter than the headlamps which glow with the output that a horse drawn trap has - maybe I forgot to refill the kerosene tanks behind then and it's getting low. I had thought about having a set of "angel eyes" main lights fitted. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Tim, do you get such a great result with just swapping the bulbs or is it a direct replacement that is needed?? I think the FFRR has lots of little LED's for the back lights, but I could be wrong Question

I'm not too worried about the front, more the back, but I guess aesthetically I would do them all if there was a genuine look and use benefit Thumbs Up L322 Big Daddy SUPERCHARGED 5.0 Autobiography - Here & Now!

IIRC unless the law in the UK has changed then all LED lights are technically illegal!

Basically when bulbs were first put onto vehicles (yes a long, long time ago), to stop people using candles the law was written to state something along the lines of "must have a filament". And as you all know LED's don't have a filament and are thus illegal.

A lot of manufacturers have been putting LED lights in their cars for a while now, especially at the rear and more recently in the front too (Audi is a good example). They can't be illegal surely? Thus my earlier comment re type approval... Very Happy

Dunno.. I am just quoting what I was told some years ago now... Maybe the law has been updated if it was the case, but it's not unlike the UK to have a law that is decades out of date that needs updating!

My trailer has LEDS and when connected to the RRS the indicators pulse faintly all the time. It is part of the Range Rover electronic test and diagnosis routine checking the trailer lights, if they had been traditional bulbs with filaments the pulsing would not be visible.

Its a known problem and costs over £200 to cure with a little plug in device (so I haven't bothered) be careful that LEDs in the rear light clusters do not suffer the same problem

Gents
I have just been on an LRE event and speaking to the instructor he advised that I must not fit LED to my caravan as the FFRR electronics don't like it and can cause all sorts of problems. It seems that some caravan manufactiures are fittining LEDs and that they need to be replace with ordinary bulbs if towing with a FFRR. I quess that this could be the same with all LR models

My LED's were complete replacements of everything including the relay in the Defenders fuse box. Same for the headlights that I have looked at - it's a whole replacement unit as the glass is replaced with a clear polycarbonate and the reflector is very fancy instead of the plain reflector that I have now. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it
