Jay - maybe I'm the 2% as personally I always stick to 30 in a 30 and 40 in a 40 and I'm painfully strict with it - I admit to speeding on National Limit roads and Motorways however never in slower limits

Also I never drink and drive obviously

Kaine I'm with you 100% - there is usually a very good reason why a speed limit has been imposed on a stretch of road, and it isn't always because of an accident record. EG where I live there are 2 roads into Glasgow from the country north of the city, both have a 30 limit that stretches some 6 miles out of town in the country and the reason is that there are lots of construction lorries using them that leave dirt on the road surface making it treacherous and there have been loads of "near misses" with cars travelling at 40 and above and sliding. Both roads have several schools on them where kids have been killed by traffic. They now have 20 zones round them and speed cameras to catch you as well. I will admit to speeding on roads with national speed limits on them, but I am very careful that the conditions are right to exceed the limit. I rarely speed on motorways as I recommen there are too many loonies on them without me doing silly things - and travelling in the inside lane at 70 usually guarantees an economical and stop free journey with lower blood preasure at the end of the trip when the other two lanes are racing neck and neck at silly speeds and bumper to bumper.

My View on this is simple, speed doesnt Kill! Bad Driving does.
If you arent able to judge the appropiate speed for the road then you should'nt be driving.

I disagree - no matter how good a driver you are, your never alone on the road - you never know whats around the next corner. I hear what your saying, however I feel that speed does kill

Driving at 90 mph on an empty motorway at 3am is not dangerous. At 5pm in heavy traffic it is very dangerous.
Driving at 70 mph in a 30 zone is absolute stupidity!
I stand by what I say, Bad Driving kills, not speed!
You never know whats around the corner, that's why a good driver would adjust his speed accordingly.

not much difference controling a blow out at 70 or 90 in a modern car.
70 was fast when they were building the motorways and eveyone was driving around in british leyland skips with drum brakes. now 70 is easy to maintain in the smallest of cars.
Braking distances have also been improved.
The only thing that seems to have got worse are the driving standards.

However I dont think we live in a perfect world and driving slowly will undoubtly lead to less incidents and fatalities - right?

The signs on the motorway saying

"Junction 30, 22 minutes"

are they travel time guidance

or start of a time trial
