RRS Driver Convicted due to Black Box Recorder

Just read a post over on Freel2 regarding a black box recorder fitted to a RRS, which has lead to the driver been convicted in court

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml...ack102.xml

Quote:
The recorder, similar to an aeroplane's black box flight recorder, continuously records the car's performance on a 10 second loop and is predominently used by engineers to diagnose problems.

In the event of a crash, it freezes and stores the information at the point of impact, giving the car's speed, engine speed, the angle of the brake and accelerator pedals and what gear the car was in.

As it detects impact, it shuts off the fuel tanks, helping to prevent an explosion

Jesus, that story makes me feel literaly sick (from the baby's and her family's perspective).

Yup, the RRS has a black box. It's mentioned in the manual. I think you need a court order to get the data out of it. Bear that in mind when we're hooning around in our 2.5t monsters.

The kid is going to have to go to jail. Anyone remember the post on Pistonheads about the guy whom was in a similar situation? People make mistakes, for sure. This one just got very bad. And I'm sure we've all pulled out when we shouldn't have.

This has been discussed before but it's a good subject. What I can't remember is if you do a soft reset or disconnect the battery does the information get lost? 2005 Zambezi TDV6 - Gone but not forgotten

I am amazed that the info from the black box was permited as discoverable evidence.................. this is not why the boxes are fitted to the vehicles and while I do not condone any speeding such as this idiot did it doesn't bode well for the rest of us. It will be too easy for Big Brother Gordon and his antifun party to gain acces to the unit now that the precedent has been set.
The idiot driver deserves all that he got, it doesn't show any of us in a good light as I'm sure we have all speeded
in 30mph areas, outside schools etc but to go to the extend of accessing the memory of the technicians
info unit is beyond the pale. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

This guy drove like an idiot

As a pilot, or captain, or driver - we are in charge.... responsible

This guy deserves everything he gets..... and the rrs black box - many modern cars have one, this one was used where a guy was just seriously daft.

We (mostly) break the rules from time to time - it's about knowing when it's right to do so. In a 30 limit, at any time is daft

Good job Land Rover

i guess in extreme cases the black box evidence is required... normally the Police/CPS will be able to prosecute without the aid of a black box via witnesses/skid marks etc.

We all speed, but everyone keeps a check on their speed when going through built up areas (20/30) zones. Doing 70 in a 30 is frankly mind blowing. Just hope the little girl gets all the help (financial & medical) she needs when growing up... RRS First Edition S/C, Vesuvius Orange, Rear Entertainment, Alpine TUE-T200DV, Stormer Alloys. Sad story ..

Just hope the precedent doesn't lead to insurance companies getting access to the box to try and wriggle out of valid claim situations... And yes i would expect the bureaucrats in London and Brussels to eventually push for mandatory black boxes that record more than just the last 10 seconds!!

Folks

If I was the mega rich family, I have to say that regardless of the legal process taking place, as a parent I guess you are responsible, and personally I'd have immediately - regardless - setup a fund, heavily leveraged with a startup amount from the personal family bank a/c

It's only money at that level

Why not? Most F1 drivers get to the top in that age bracket...

I grew up in Italy and my father taught me how to drive when I was 12...never had a car accident in all the years I have had a car licence...about 20 years... 2007 Audi Q7 4.2 FSI Grey/Black Int.

Its not strictly "black box" information is it? In the article it says it is collecting information about the speed just before the accident.

Well the police has always been able to do it, all the do is look at the evidence AFTER the accident and deduce the speed BEFORE the accident...all this is doing is making it a little easier, which mean PC Plod and the Army of Hobby Bobbies can do even less work.

I think this is a good thing in general, however it relies on the sensors in the car working. If we become too reliant on technology then we loose intelligence...see what happened to the police force and CCTV cameras...CCTV camera usage UP police presence DOWN....crime UP...why? Because nobody watches the CCTV cameras live...only use it for evidence AFTER the incident....or to give people fines...

I mean my Tracker (Alarm) stores the last 300 hours of movement, which Navtrack will download for the princely sum off 30 pounds... 2007 Audi Q7 4.2 FSI Grey/Black Int.

When I was 17 I had a Ford Escort and I may have done some pretty stupid things in it. Better, maybe, to do stupid things in a smaller car than a 2.5 tonne rocketship?

Suppose it's just a matter of training / education / experience.

I sure i'd not give me, as a 17 year old, a RRS SC or for that matter a diesel. I've learnt alot since. 2022 P440e AB

'generally speaking' you test out your own limits of driving when your younger - with this in mind young drivers should drive slower cars - I dont want this to sound like a sweeping statement, however I hope you get my point.

I had to pop round to a neighbours only a few weeks ago to speak with the young lad there and ask him to slow down when around our lanes - I said to him I did the same thing as a kid, but even so I had to ask him to slow down (earlier that day I had to drive up a hedge so he could hammer past me in his corsa)
