On the way to work this morning my F g Bonnet sprang open!! Luckily there are 3 catches and the one on the passanger side held and I was able to stop and sort it. Couldn't see any obvious problems and it closed perfectly again. Luckily I was only doing about 40mph behind a truck! normally I'm going a lot quicker on that stretch of road - I hate to think what might have happened!

Alas, as Bobby rightly says, this has happened a few times. I'm not sure there was ever any fix other than to say that it is/was quite easy to mislocate the bonnet catches when closing the bonnet leaving it liable to coming back up once moving. Although it sounds like teaching you to suck eggs, the general advice was to ensure that the bonnet closed evenly by ensuring you closed it with both hands, each one towards either side and actually pushed it into place rather than letting it drop.

As you say, could've been a bit more hairy than it was...

You are not the only one with that problem. It also happened to me 2 weeks ago on RRS 2008 when I was driving approx. 120km/h on the highway and I could see the bonnet/spring lifting up slightly on the drivers side . Now i do not know if it was my mistake because I was just checking oil before but I think that i closed it properly-I did not drop the bonnet I closed it evenly with my hands.
Hopefully it won´t happen again....  2008 RRS TDV8 HSE, Java black, Alpaca,.....

This is a little disturbing.

The digital display on the drivers binnacle should warn the driver if the bonnet, doors or tailgate are not closed properly. If the bonnet is not latched correctly and you are not getting the warning message it sounds as if the bonnet sensor is not doing its job.

Whenever you open and subsequently close the bonnet you should use two hands, placed approx shoulder width apart to ensure even force is used across the two bonnet catches. It is always worth double checking that the bonnet latches are engaged properly by trying to lift the bonnet at each corner above the headlamp unit. Arctic Frost TDV6 SE. You should be able to test the sensor of course by deliberately not closing the bonnet and starting the car to see if you get an alarm.

The sensor is actually the bonnet alarm sensor. So if the bonnet isn't closed properly the alarm will sound when ever you try locking the car with the key fob.

Thnx for the replies chaps - Just as a point of note, there was defo no bonnet open warning and the last time I had opened it myself was over a week ago and I am always careful to make sure it is closed properly. When it popped it was audible inside the car, " a metallic POP", as if a latch had slipped or been forced. When I ispected the latches I expected to find one had sheared or come loose in some way - but everything looks fine and the bonnet is closed and appears secure (as it was before). Car is due for 1st service in 2k so I'll get the dealer to check it out then. Unless it pops again ofcourse! then I'll be straight on to them. 2013 Discovery HSE Luxury - 3.0 SDV6 - Santorini Black

If the bonnet is popping without warning it may be worth dropping into your stealers before the service. You never know when it may happen again. Arctic Frost TDV6 SE. This happened to me once on my old TDV6, no warning on dash but could clearly see the bonnet trying to lift. Since then when I close it firmly with both hands I always give the corners a tug to make sure the latch has engaged properly. Fingers crossed.

Think part of the issue is that the bonnet is very light and therefore very flexable if the wind gets under the edge of it. TDV6 - gone

............ multiple catches cause dealers problems. Two times coming back from a service my FFRR was only half latched.
Stopped on the hard shoulder as I'd had enough excitement from my journey and re-latched. Dealers claim it was 'fine' when it was handed over. Thanks Guy Salmon (Aylesford) .......... ______________________________________________
